Scarab III X dimension

anybody ever try moving up the X dim on a Scarab III? I am getting ready to cut the holes in my transom and was thinking of moving them up an inch or two. Mine is a stock 89 and was hoping to squeeze a mph or two out of it after putting a fresh transom in it. any thoughts?

Im pretty sure the older scarabs had quite a bit of hook in them. With the props out today, I would think you would see a nice increase in mph, and not have issues carrying the bow or planing.

Is yours a TRS or bravo boat? If its a bravo I'd say just go with shorties, but if I remember right you had TRS on that thing.

Mines a Bravo boat, I was thinking of going up two inches. I am sure it is pretty deep as it is.

Dave you might try getting in touch with Tinkerer, I remember reading someone had been messing with drive heighths, it might have been him.

Yes it was tinkerer

What kind of power are you putting in that boat? and where are the pics of this project????? I would really like to see how to glass in a transom I have been thinking of doing that in the next year or 2. Have you posted any on OSO or SO to follow.
Thanks,
Jason

Actually i havnt posted any pics yet but i will do a thread on it when im done. My boat had stock 365 Mags and i bumped them up a bit with Air-gap intakes, cams, carbs, exhaust and roller valvetrain. I am only looking for about 450-475 hp out of them. Its a great boat and has never given me any trouble so i'd like to keep it that way, I would like to keep it relativly stock or close to it. This thing is my Griswold family truckster of the water :D

There is no hook in the scarab III hull. I have been here for a while and keep hearing this. Any one else with a Scarab III please check your hull and you will see I am right. I have an 87 and I have checked it several times, mostly when I read a post that states it does. I see no hook at all. I have TRS and the X dimention seems high. I never measured it but my boat will not get out of the water with a three blade. I run four blade bravo ones and it pops right out of the water. With stock 370s it runs 62.5 on gps. Looks like I am checking my bottom again!

just checked mine, its an 89. No hook to speak of, maybe a little bit on the stbd strake but not much.

glassdave 02-28-2009 11:22 AM

yep . . . just looked at my friends 86 III and no hookie either

Your going to keep us in suspense until the project is done! Your supposed to post pictures as your performing the work so we can all give you our expert opinions:ernaehrung004:

a hook is best explained by a depression in the running surface of the hull typically near the stern just forward of the transom. This depression is often caused by improperly supporting the boat while storing it on a trailer. The bunks on a trailer when properly setup should extend beyond the transom so the vertical wall of the transom can help carry the weight of the hull. When the bunks do not extend beyond the transom and the boat sits on them they actually make depressions in the hull and this is called a hook. It can effect the boat in several ways but most often it acts like trim tabs forcing the bow of the boat over into the water. I am sure glassdave could provide some additional insight!

Never feel bad about asking questions!

...Jim

Here is a good picture of me removing the hook from the bottom of my Tahiti Jet. you can see how bad this hook was by the amount of fiberglass I had to use to build it up. This hook I think was caused mostly during the molding process but I am not sure. She is a 74 hull!

Mine appears to have a hook...

hook...line...and sinker! :evilb:

Got it, thanks Jim. This worked out perfect becasue I've also wondered what the bottom of a jet boat looked like too. Is that what's called a runner bottom?

502ss 04-15-2009 05:54 PM

Your welcome, I have never heard it called a runner!

Aren't 'hooks' built into the hull as constant stern lift in lieu of trim tabs? As well as the transom trailer issue.
