New here, need advice on 1989 scarab
 

Hi guys I am new here, I have always wanted a scarab, but I never got one. Well now I am looking for another boat again, and this one comes up for trade for my car.

What can you guys tell me about this model, because the exterior, interior, drive and motor all seem great.
I have not driven it yet though either.

-1989 Wellcraft Scarab Excell 21
-383 stroker 20 hours on rebuild- 375hp/400tq
-says it can hit 70 on glass water, and with more prop maybe 80.
-can do exhaust through hull, or in water

Is this a decent model to get in to?
What are the known problems for this year?

Its a good boat,but not going to get anywhere near 80 with that power. I am running 500HP and the best I have ever seen with perfect conditions on GPS was 73. will run 70 allday long.

Do yourself a favor and buy something larger----- 26ft and above if you can... that gives you more room in the boat and it will handle better in the water when running .Speed is only one consideration when looking for an offshore boat.You wont regret it later.......

I second that. You will always want to move up in size.

I am in WI. Most of the time the boat will be on lake Winnebago, sometimes on lake Michigan. I am fine with it being 21' I am more concerned how fast I can make it.

Money equals fun, but this boat is an option; because the wife is not to happy about getting a flat bottom v drive.

So I said I would compromise and get something bigger, but I still want a fast boat.

Well I just read some more things here, and now I am concerned that if it has the alpha drive it won't handle the 375hp/400tq of the 383. Is this going to be a problem for me?
I have to find out what model drive it is.

There are those that will tell you that an alpha can handle it if you take it easy. And there are some that have, but it is the exception rather than the rule.

Long term the bravo would be better. Also if you are going to up power and speed at any point you will be better off. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

Okay well, I guess that helps in the decision making process. This also explains why he may have just had drive work done after the 383 was put in.

I have an 89 21 excel and love it, I have the stock 350 in it but it's a fun boat, if I could do it over I would get something slightly bigger. From what I have read the alphas will only do 300hp
