Larry Smith Edition Scarab????
Hello, I'm looking for some advice in reference to a Scarab i'm looking to purchase. Its a 1986 Scarab, and the lady who is selling it insists that its a "Larry Smith Edition" Scarab. The boat belong to her husband who has recently passed away. So i'm wondering if its an actual Larry Smith build boat or did Wellcraft issue a Larry Smith Edition boat. Thanks for the help

any pics? what color? motors? drives?
6pack cockpit? |
Its mostly white in color, with 3 blue strips on the side towards the top of the boat. It has twin 225 Yamaha outboards, but I think they were added sometime after 1988.

Is there any definate way to verifiy whether the boat is a Larry Smith? The lady only wants $4000 for the boat, and i'm thinking if its truely a Larry Smith, I could be getting a very good deal.

hmmm....im not sure....maybe someone will chime in that knows the answer......good luck!

The HIN on the back of a Larry Smith boat will start with TSC, Team Scarab Inc. A Wellcraft boat will be WEL.

TSC is the "newer' Team Scarab. SQE is the older Larry Smith hull ID.

What about a Larry Smith that starts with AZZ?

TSC was the original hull ID number. SQE came later in about 1984

I have had owners try and argue that it was a legit...but when you see a Scarab (or whatever brand)...with the HIN number missing on the transom and an FLZL HIN Sticker, there is usually only one of 2 explanations as described above. Same thing happens with Boat trailers...kind of funny to see an Aluminum Boat trailer with "Loadmaster" Decals/labels yet they try to claim it is a "Home Made Trailer"....yeah right. Somewhere along the line the legal ownership has disappeared, for whatever reason, and some people will use the "Home Made Title" loopholes to make it legal again, or so they think. Last year I saw a pristine Warlock World Class for sale as a Chris Craft, with a HIN engraved poorly in the hull from an 82 CC Scorpion and was advertised as such....was also sold as such to an unsuspecting buyer. The used boat dealer knew darn well it was not a Chris Craft, at least for sure after I proved it to him, but even after that he said "Not a problem, it is done all the time".... As always,.. Buyer Beware...and as a rule if the HIN # doesn't make any sense, be very very cautious. Cheers, Dave |
Thank you for the reply. I spoke to Dan from Archer Marine two days ago and we figured it out. The boat is a documented Larry Smith Scarab, however somewhere down the line, a new HID number was placed on the boat. It was built and 87 for Shawn McWhinney down in sunset aquatic. I really appreciate the info.

I would guess a boat with an "AZZ" HIN was either salvaged, or stolen and then someone got a "Home Made" Arizona Title for it. I see them here in Florida all the time, starts with FLZL.
