38 Scarab with Arnesons

My next boat is going to be a 38 Scarab (88 or 89 ish) and seeing as I have a pair of ASD6's on the shelf thought I'd maybe save 'em for that project. I'm a year or so from this project but thought I'd see if anyone ever ran a pair on this hull. I know I know . . . . Call Rik, Ill call Rik again when I get my ducks more in a row :D for now Im just running things through my mind. Just wanted to see if anyone had any first hand experience with this combo

GD-do you know anything about the KV that was for sale with arensons? if so how did it do? pro and cons? thanks

Rik 11-22-2012 10:38 PM

Larry Smith put quite a few of them together with Arnesons back in the day.

No i dont know anything about it. Looked bad azz though, awesome paint to. I want to do roughly the same thing but with a Excel deck 88 or 89. Am wanting to build a relatively bullet proof package to do battle with Lake Erie slop lol. No cabin other then carpet and maybe a V birth but thats it. Fully tabbed with crash bulkheads and NO amenities (a/c, fridge, blah blah blah lol).

Rik I will contact you later when i sort out which way i am going. As it stands i have a pair of left and right BW 1721's and would like to put roughly 650 conservative hp in front of them. Not looking for all out speed but seventies would keep me happy as i really just want reliability. I am sure i will be needing a pair of boxes and the proper wedge plates. Would these drives work on a 38? looked at Chucks 7's and they appear to be roughly the same dimensions just not as beefy with the smaller shaft and tube. Can i put the seven style rubber boot on 1721's? Was going to use these on a Magnum i have but am thinking different now. Whats the difference in a 1721 and a six anyway?

Dave, the only thing I would suggest is to change the thrust tubes and shafts. The tubes you have are for the 4" hub it appears and there are no propellers for them worth a damn

Thanks for the input Rik, I will get with you latter on this stuff. Gotta off my Scarab before i really dig into this project. I just like compiling info (as most people do lol) Any thoughts on pitch/dia/rake i should look for for a thirty eight scarab with roughly six fifty hp?

Any chance you could you pm me a ballpark on what i need to start saving for tubes and shafts. I am up on pricing for the boxes and plates. This is gonna be the last boat I'm gonna build myself for a while, always wanted this kinda rig. I think this will keep me happy for a while.

Incidentally anyone looking for a great 34 ScarabIII mine will be available in the spring. All new stringers/transom, fresh power, raised X dim, new cockpit upholstery, all new factory stripes and logos, etc . . . low original hour freshwater cream puff lol :D

I bought the old '85 38' with arnesons that was for sale on here awhile back. the boat is still in the process of replacing stringers and now being repainted. I would love to talk to rik about the drives I have and what i need to freshen them up, but I am not quite to that stage yet. The steering ram brackets have kaama written on them, which the boat originally came with.here is a pic of the transom before I bought it, the drives were not on the boat when I picked it up. hopefully the link works. https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7735202_n.jpg

Scarab family
We have about the same size boat. Ours is a 1980 38ft 377 with kevlar hull and its about 9500 lbs. With the 454 set up we went about 55mph. We have sence upgraded to 540/700HP and took the hook out of the hull and now she goes about 76-78mph.
We are in the process of installing more power (850-900HP) and Arneson ASD8 drives. Hope this helps you! Give us a call if you need any help. Enjoy!

I do not know a lot about the scarab hull. However I had many people around the docks tell me that my kaama drives would not produce enough bow lift. I have my props spinning in and at neutral or a just bump up of trim, I have more than enough bow lift. It will pick the entire boat up when you slam the throttles down. I personally think the statement that surface drives do not provide bow lift is a myth. My hull is a straight bottom, engines are far forward due the trans and drive line, but my cabin is damn near stripped of nothing but some cushions.

I agree, i really think its all about prop tuning/technology. If you try and "find" props that will work, well you probably wont. I suspect most props simply do not have enough rake and diameter to be suitable for a true surface drive. Long and short of it is you need a prop specifically for these things for it to function optimally.

Tim L. thanks for the info i may need a thing or two. Boxes? Wedge plates? . . . . props :D

Wally 04-12-2013 08:50 AM

A tad older then what you want but the price is probably right and its somewhat local! ;)
