46 Larry Smith Scarab
I am looking for information/pictures of Larry Smith's boats. If you could be of any help please e mail me .
[email protected] |
I can get info on about
every 46ft Larry Smith that was built. Not a lot of them around that have not been sitting rotting away. I will EMail you from the Business Computer with Photos. Mike J. |
I did some checking over
the weekend and there were only 6 46ft Larry Smith Scarabs ever built. The mold is still here in SoCal if you want a new one. The photos I have are of the Chuck Norris Twin Cat W/Arneson surface drives. It sold W/Hydro Hoist in Tortola B.V.I. last year. I did a complete rebuild/ ReRig of the boat for the Owner of PUSSERS RUM. He had the Boat 8 years. I will send you some shots Mike J. |
Mike J,
Post some shots here if you get a chance.:) Shane |
Thanks a lot mike for your time.
|
Why are these boats somewhere sitting rotting away? Are they slow, unrealiable, have bad handling?
|
Hey Mike J,
Do you know the history of a certain 43 Larry Smith ? We call it the number 5 boat, I think it was the one that set the some kilo record at 126 . The boat was mostly white with a real subtle stars and stripes graphic on it. A friend of a friend owns it , it has triple 1100's with crashboxes and number 6's. The story I heard was he bought it right from Wellcraft with a broken motor and drive for REAL cheap. |
26scarab, The 43ft you ask
about was the GENTRY #5 and the record was 126.38 set Oct.7 1993. It was running 3 Gentry Turbo Motors. I sure I will get a reply on that from "extremeF1" I sent your cpoy of the 1990 races yesterday, I have a 1 or 2 posters of the Gentry Scarab and I will send one for your friend. Boatrcr185, Bad choice of words "Rotting" its kind of a term for not being use much, I sent you a Email about the one that has been stripped and setting outside for a few years. Mica, I can't post photos from my Webtv. send me your email, Michael from Germany has been nice enough to post photos for me to the Board. Michael, Your BOX of tapes and "T" Shirts went out also. Mike J. [email protected] |
Thanks for the reply and the tape Mike.
Just to let you know, that boat is owned by a pretty wealthy individual and is well maintained. Although it isn't used too much. Unfortunatly they have not been able to duplicate that original speed. I believe the fastest it has gone was 118 GPS. They have told be it is pretty squirrely at that speed and couldn't imagine what it would be like at 126 ! You are wealth of Scarab information ! There are actually a few Larry Smith boats running around on the nearby lake. My friend Lenny owns a 31 , that used to be the Patriot Wave boat and I believe it was driven by Craig Archer. Then another friend had a 38 built around 6-7 years ago, it was blue with American Flag graphics and I believe had Merc 1000's in it. He sold it a few years ago and the new owner has it for sale right now , real cheap ! I really like my Scarab but wish it was one of the 26 CV's then I would really be flying ! It sounds like you have allot of old memorabilia, I'm kind of a collector of the stuff so if you have anything you might want to sell PM or email me. Chuck |
just got one of the 46 larry smiths. should be delivered in a couple weeks, im real excited for this boat.
|
GREAT, Let me know a little more about it and
perhaps I can fill in some of the 46s past history. Mike J. |
Boat185: Did some checking
and the 46'Scarab with 2 #5s on each side a a #3 in the center is a boat that was owned by a man in NJ, Who also had a vacation home on a island in Miami, Didn't think he would ever sell that boat. That is a real find. Mike J. |
Im not sure if that is the same boat. When my parents looked at it it was at the mans house in Lauderdale... intercoastal waters i believe. The man had a skater being built and died. Im not sure... tell me what you think
|
MikeJ,
Thanks for the photos you sent today:) :) :) Shane |
Yes its the one, With him
passing away would explain why it is being sold. He did live on a Island on the Waterway called Turn Bow or something like that his name was Bob Hanley. Mike J. |
thanks mike j youve been a wealth of information. any luck on the speck sheets?
|
I have the April 2000 Powerboat issue. On page 109 there is an ad for a 46 ft Larry Smith Scarab (very fast). All white with 1000HP evolution engines #6 drives TNT rigged and Bobby Morre maintained. $149,500 Mickey Mills.
|
Mike J-
I am wrong. My dad said that the person who died was the boats second owner. So I don't know I guess. Maybe this guy had bought it from Mickey Mills a while ago but Micky mills wouldn't sell his boat? Maybe there are two 46's with the #5's and 1 #3, also I think the drives are new than the boat since the #3 is a 3A, and i believe Merc changed that later than the year of the boat, but I will check again. Thanks again |
Was bob hanley the first owner of the boat?
|
Mike J, what kind of boat are you running.
|
Well I have the FIRST 16ft
Scarab Jet Sprint,The 4th 26ft Larry Smith Flat deck Second of Two 18 Dagree bottom Ski/River raceboats Paul Newman"Actor/racer ran the other and a 13ft prototype NAVY remote control surface target Boat I made but they used a ROBOSKI Jet ski that I also worked on. Im now involved with SKATER Boats for Rique Ford "Ragamuffin" and Coby Klein "Kidstuf" and another V-Bottom "XXXXXXX" which has to be done Mid Aug. The 13ft is in my wifes flower bed so im in trouble. Mike J. |

Do you know of a guy that used to race a 29 foot Scarab out of California called "Pure Insanity"? His name was Jeff Brown and he raced in production class in the 70's. |

Re: 46 Larry Smith Scarab
I have not seen the Chuck Norris 46ft in a few years but I
heard that the Owner sold it about 3 years ago. I did a rerig of the boat at Team Scarab in the 90s for the owner of "PUSSERS" RUM and delivered it to the Island of TORTOLA in the B.V.I. The boat was Yellow with the Pussers name down both sides and the LoGo on the top deck, It had CAT motors but it had Arneson surface drives (Drop Boxs) Charles and Joanna Tobias Named it Yellow Bird. Charles told me he had sold it along with a number of other items to buy back "Pussers Rum" from the Jim Beam company. Please let me know if it is in fact the same boat I have the hull number and "ALL" Larry Smith Scarabs have the hull numbers glassed into the Hull in a place inside the bow for a record. The numbers start with SQR. EMail me and I will send somephotos Mike Jenkins [email protected] EX MEMBER TEAM SCARAB IN CALIFORNIA U.S.A. |

http://www.bullockmarine.com/boat_li..._31/index.html Din't know the particular boat but I remember Wellcraft doing several limited editions- one I believe was an Emerson Fittipaldi signature boat Bruce Bullock is as straight as they come and a nice guy to boot. You can't go wrong dealing with him |

[email protected] The Gentry 46 was in the hands of a used car dealer- at least a year or so ago. I came across it on the net one evening. They were asking $75K for it - hull and trailer. $95 for one with triple III's is alot of dough. Maybe with triple VI's............. |
Re: 46 Larry Smith Scarab
94scarab29, Thats one of the Wellcraft built boats that was
used in the Hi-Performance driving School a few years back. Yes Donnie W. was involved in the building of those boats anda lady named Zora F. was in charge of the bookings and paperwork. Wellcraft had a number of the very best drivers as trainers most of the boats went to the Houston Texas area when the school was shut down The boats were very well built had the best of care. deltatow.com is it for sale ???? let me know thanks chris [email protected] |
Re: 46 Larry Smith Scarab
The 46 in Europe is / was on the West Coast of Scotland. It is the boat driven by Chuck Norris and was Drambuie Challenger - not to be confused with the later Drambuie boat that was a 50 with 4 Cats. I say 'was' as it's nolonger in existance due to a nasty accident involving a train when the boat trailer got stuck on a crossing.
The boat was sold to Drambuie by my father and I to do the Round Britain record. I've got some photos of it in Sarasota before we shipped it to Europe and also once it got here in the Drambuie colours. Think I may even have a copy of the promo video. Let me know if i can be of any help. |
