Repower 2000 scarab 38 avs
Has anyone ever successfully placed 8.1 rather than 8.2 in this boat? Width is just enough difference it appears to have motors damn near rubbing each other therefore making it seem not possible...

Dimensions should be same. I'm putting tall deck 572 which are taller on deck height.

Appreciate that. According to mercury dealer (2)496 is 1-1/2" wider. Measuring the 502's that are in place I have 1-3/4" current clearance... Worrisome for motors touching or repairs... Concerned to buy the motors and then not fit with clearance.

Curious why 496? Anything wrong with your 502s
|
Same question as above? Randy

+3 that seems going backwards.

Ok ok! Damn you guys are on me! I had a deal on a couple 496 engines. However, I found 2 new merc 502 for 13K each... So leaning towards them now...
We need details...lol Only cause we care. |
Black, new from merc, 380 hp. Fuel injected. Not the fastest, but should have low attrition rate. Will need exhaust and either new gauges or convert or for analogs. The blue 500+ gets into mercs "performance line" which is ALOT more expensive for my budget.

What's wrong with your 502s you have in boat? I have 2 502 mag 435hp mpi I'm pulling out of 38 avs with 320 hours that are perfect that I'd make u a deal on, run flawless just to slow.

go for the hp 500s

Got the 496's w/x drives |
I have hp 500 that run great just rebuilt last year installed blowers on them and are putting out about 800 hp net gain was about 13 miles per hour just think a stepped hull with that hp should run over 100 was woundering if any buddy out there has put extension boxes on there 38avs and if so was it worth the effort. but thank for the offer

Engines look great... one thing about sock power... waaay less maintenance. My 502's can still push my '33 60mph all day. and have been doing for 7+ years now with just oil changes, rubber parts and drive maint. what cruising speed to you expect with them on your 38? I still kick myself for not pulling trigger when I got the '33 and a same model '38 was rt next to her.
|
Ill take a little extra maitenance. Stock power in a boat that weighs over 5 tons is boring to me accelerates like golf cart, but to each there own. You never see twin step Cigs with anything less than 500 horse. Just my .02 cents. 33 prob runs ok with stock power but weight of a 38 is complete diff animal.
|
Enjoy the setup. Hope it is trouble free and as long as it runs when you turn the key everything else works out.

496 are in... Couple adjustments needed.... Risers are an issue

Sweet. Hope the serve you well. I have one in, and the other this week coming up. I have some stringer bracket issues over the 454 MPI's, and cool fuel boxes, and motor mount's. Minor issues almost finished. I believe these engine will do just want we want. Work every time you turn thekey and runs very well, and sound good. More time boating less time breaking. LOL

What's the issue with the risers, too tall? or not lining up with the tips? I had to use S pipes with my Kachina to line up the risers to the tips & would recommend buying some already built or having some built as mine were pieced together in the middle & kept coming apart. Install looks good, Randy
