WOW WOW WOW and WOW!!! Love it!

Gh700xx 05-21-2014 08:35 AM

looks wicked man

hblair 05-21-2014 08:37 AM

Thanks guys. The copper worked with the off white in my head but you don't know for sure til you see it with your eyes.

hullofjustis 05-21-2014 11:26 AM

wow i am impressed with how quick this has gone tohether i am on summer number 3. it better be completed by the end of june at the latest. I did you enclose the fuel tank pick ups and senders? it lookes like you glassed over it?

hblair 05-21-2014 12:08 PM

Yeah the pickup and hoses are under the glass in the center. Just think of it as a lid that you'll probably never have to open, but if you do, you just open it with a very carefully placed hole saw.:)

FASTTIMES 05-22-2014 09:19 AM

wow! Very Nice Sir --- Any idea on how many man hours you guys have in it?

hblair 05-22-2014 11:44 AM

Well since about October we average prolly 3 nights a week 5:30 til 10 or 11, and 2-3 all day Saturdays a month. Usually 2 guys, sometimes just me, sometimes 4 of us. I've actually enjoyed this because this is the first offshore boat I have owned. I don't see me doing another one like this (stringers and transom) unless it's a boat that makes economic sense. These boats, although cool, neat looking, well designed, just aren't worth that much money.

hblair 05-22-2014 12:40 PM

So I guess about 30 hrs. a week since October, and keep in mind this after hours stuff aint near as efficient as what we do during the workday. If this were a paying customer job it would prolly take 1/4 the time. But this kind of stuff is what helps keep me sane.

getting there!!!

nice work!

mysweetone 05-28-2014 09:25 AM

how are you making out with the cam and lifter problem you encountered?

boat is GORGEOUS!

hblair 05-28-2014 11:16 PM

Well had an engine builder come pick up the engine. He's gonna set it up on a stand in his garage and run it with a new cam and lifters and pushrods. That's after taking it apart and cleaning it like crazy and checking the bearings, etc. We're hoping Lunati will be warrantying the cam/lifters. I have no luck with flat tappet cams break ins. Maybe over the winter I'll have rollers installed, but right now I just want to get her going.
Thanks for the compliments on the boat. Getting the wellcraft decal on the side of the hull was like finally scratching an itch...

mysweetone 05-29-2014 06:29 AM

Glad to hear the engine is in good hands. So what do you have left to do? and do you have a goal in mind for a splash date?

hblair 05-29-2014 06:59 AM

We're having a family campout at lake Guntersville that was originally planned to be this past (memorial day) weekend. It got bumped to the weekend of June 21-22. Our major hurdles are painting the starboard side, painting the engine hatches, sandblasting and painting the trailer, installing the engines/transmissions. Of course there's all kinds of little things here and there to be done. I feel a lot better with the engines in the hands they are in now. The goal looks doable. Keep in mind we're doing almost all of this after hours and on Saturdays.

Mike S. 05-29-2014 11:18 AM

Man this is a awesome build thread! Love the boat and nice work!!

hblair 05-29-2014 11:35 PM

Thanks Mike.
I messed around in the engine compartment tonight. Got some of the steering sorted out. This boat has nose cones on the drives which from what I understand puts additional stress on the steering linkage. I'd like to see about hydraulic steering this winter. We've been having to tighten play out of just about every joint in the linkage.

Got the hatches painted and installed today. The underside got painted with the two part water based epoxy we painted the engine compartment with. Painted the top with single stage urethane. We also got the wiring in the console finished up.

It's been great to follow this resto!..............all the hard work is paying off!..............looks Wonderful!

Gh700xx 06-01-2014 11:26 AM

I'm ready to see this thing in the water man looks awesome.

hblair 06-06-2014 07:19 AM

I was gone from Sunday thru yesterday afternoon to Christian Youth Camp, but we were able to get a lot done last night. We got all this done to the right side in about 4 hours. 3 guys with DA's going, got the whole right side sanded, from the bottom of the keel to the rubrail. We got epoxy applied to the gouges and divets. We're gonna try to prime it today and hopefully paint it tomorrow. We shall see. I have given my guys a pep talk. If the engines come back in time and we're able to get done what we're trying to get done, we hope to have the boat ready for the water by next weekend. (notice I didn't say done, plan to replace gauges and work on console later, as well as reupholster some stuff later)

hullofjustis 06-06-2014 07:44 AM

am i seeing this correctly, you painted one side at a time? pretty good Idea, am wondering how the paint will match being separate?

hblair 06-06-2014 08:39 AM

On this hull there are good breaking points for the paint. The bow and keel have so sharp a break from side to side that it makes breaking the paint no big deal. As far as color match, no problem, even if it were off a little, you wouldn't see it because of the break. Also, doing it this way, you gotta be sure the opposite is dry before you lay her over, and of course, you have to disburse the weight evenly.

hullofjustis 06-06-2014 11:23 AM

when you had the liner out were you able to notice. how much room is there in the bow between the hull side and the liner side? i am interested in stiffening the hull.sides. so the boat is more solid. until i seen you remove the liner i would have glassed the inner liner and don e nothing to the integrity of the hull. i want to limit the creaks and rattles when running in the chesapeake bay. i already did some glassing of the hull side in the stern and it is quite a bit stiffer than it was.

hblair 06-06-2014 02:59 PM

When we had the deck off the boat, we could see down inside the bow closet and it looked like about 1" or less between the liner and the outer hull. Expanding structural foam may be the ticket for you there. I bought a case of liquid nails and shot some down in there below where I epoxied the the hull and the liner together at the rubrail, but I'm unsure how much actually contacted both the outer hull and the inner liner. I know some did, because it feels more solid, but to be sure, I'd say some expanding structural foam would do it.

Team Archer 06-06-2014 05:19 PM

Boat looks great but just one bit of advice turn your deck hatches sideways opening that way if god forbid they don't get latched they don't fly open and break off that's from experience.

hullofjustis 06-06-2014 05:35 PM

That is genius hblair i am sure that will save a ton of time and money

cougarman 06-06-2014 05:55 PM

Nice Redo Like the cream color too easy on the eyes!

hblair 06-07-2014 01:47 AM

Thanks guys. We got the right side primed tonight, hope to get it painted tomorrow, and maybe the trailer as well. I bought some new fenders for the trailer and will be fabricating some brackets tomorrow, sand blasting it, and hope to paint it. The trailer came with dayton axles, which look dated, but the guy who had it before the previous owner had rebuilt the brakes, ran new lines, etc. The surge brakes work great, so I guess I'll be keeping it, for now anyway.

We got the trailer sandblasted today as well as got the right side of the hull painted. Should be able to get the trailer painted monday...

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t...psad4117de.jpg

hblair 06-10-2014 07:37 AM

Getting the trailer ready for paint is, of course, taking longer than planned. We're painting it the copper color (single stage urethane in this case), and since it's a metallic color, we're having to smooth up the outer rails, etc. so it'll look half way decent.

make sure you have a spare whell and tire BEFORE you get in trouble on the road... they are really hard to find, takes forever to get them when you order... believe me !!!

Gh700xx 06-11-2014 08:31 AM

no joke that would be nice. good looking trailer man

hblair 06-11-2014 02:33 PM

Thanks guys. Even with the space we have, this thing takes up a lot of it. We got the boat back on the trailer, looks like I'm going to add a few more stripes to kinda break this up. Probably a 1/2" to 1" inch black stripe between the colors at least...
