Scarab boys....little help please

What's up guys. I have a question for you if you will. I ran into a guy that runs a 32' Scarab, mid to late 1990's. I can't remember if he said he was running 502 mags or hp500/500efi motors. Anyway, he said he ran 90 GPS and I about spit up my beer. That sounds big time fast with stock power to me. What do you all think?? Sounds like a low 80's boat to me with either motor pacakge, but I know little about the Scarabs. Thanks for you help, take 'er slooowwwww. Allan4:D

jb 09-17-2002 09:32 PM

no 32 scarabs closed deck
the cc were 30 and 32 I believe.
Any how 92 - 97 non step 31's with 500's..75 - 77
with step(avs) 3-4 more
give or take. Now with the volvo 600's in an AVS...thats another story and the best combo out there

Allan4 09-18-2002 04:18 PM

This guy must really be full o' s***. HE told me the wrong boat size!!!! Infact I asked him if it was a 31 or 32 because, knowing little about these I could not remember what Scarab built. Well, probably ain't his then. Allright, I thought 80's was generous, guess I was right. Thanks man, later

Funny Mike. :D Personally, I wasn't offended by the thread title.

Scarab built 30, 31, 33 and 34's over the years, so 32 isn't right unless he's adding his swim platform to a figure that already has the platform in the number. :)

Even with 500HP's, it could be a stretch, although I have a few buddies with 43 and 46' Black Thunders, running them up to high 70's and 80's with a pair (not trips) HP500's (one runs 70MPH at 4000 RPM's) If it's a stepped hull Scarab, trimmed out to the point he's going to blow his universal out, I suppose it's possible if you add a small chop, tide/current, wind, nobody else on board, 2 gallons of gas in the tank and stripped of all gear and accessories. :D But that's just a wild guess, no scientific fact.

jb 09-19-2002 04:01 PM

Kelley, Whats the headroom in your 34??? Is it much diferent than a 31?

Keith 09-19-2002 04:15 PM

I think it's the same. 4' 11", and I'm still trying to figure out where that measurement comes from. :D My GF is 4' 11" and can't stand up completely straight. I think it's 4' 11" without the headliner maybe?

blue thunder 09-19-2002 04:40 PM

Yessum massa Alann4 sir... we be likin to hep ya.. thanks fer axing. :D

But seriously... a 31 footer with 502s (stock) won't do 90mph. I'm pretty sure of that. Maybe it has NO?

BT

Tinkerer 09-19-2002 08:25 PM

KELLEY--- What does your 34 look like? What power and what top speed. Also what amenities do you have in the cabin?
I have a 93 34 ft

jb 09-19-2002 09:06 PM

Tinker...was that the last year for the 34???
Post some pics guys!

Keith 09-19-2002 09:45 PM

Tinkerboater,

Click on small link "34 Scarab" in my signature, I have a single page with some pics and some specs. No shots of the cabin though. 63MPH on GPS is about normal WOT, but I've seen 65MPH a few times pushing the trim limits. I rarely run past 4000 RPM's though, typically cruise at 38-39MPH @ 3200 RPM's.

Running the original 454mags and Gil Offshore. 13 seasons of trouble free boating until this past weekend, think I blew a head gasket. No reason to complain about anything, other than the prices for some new 502/450HP's I'm looking at putting in this winter.

Running the original Mirage 3 blades, 23 pitch, had them double cupped by local shop to give me better bite out of the hole.

I think your boat may have same layout. The cockpit has the double bolster and more room in it than a 38 footer :) Cabin has port side entrance, starboard side enclosed head, porta potty, etc. Portside galley counter, shore power panel, stereo, fridge, etc. Circular couch with a pad inserted in middle to make larger sleeping area. V-berth is useless, like a coffin, unsleepable due to low head room caused by rather large anchor locker. Was going to redo cabin and make V-berth longer, inserting 2 facing seats, build in some cabinet storage, add a TV/VCR, etc. Put the kabosh on that plan this week, motors are the priority now.

Also carry along a Kool-Kart portable A/C unit, plenty cold power for the cabin. Sits up in the V-berth or at the cabin door, it's a black Samsonite suitcase, literally, with the A/C built into it.

How is yours setup? Speed, etc.?

Tinkerer 09-20-2002 07:54 PM

Sorry guys its a 92 -- 34 SCARAB

It has 502 Bravo set up . Stock the boat did 65 gps but the boat is loaded including a radar and arch and bimini that is always up in the air flow. The boat now has 600 HP 502's and the boat has a top speed of 77 mph gps. I have roughly the same cabin as you have but I have a electric flush toilet. I redid the head two years ago and replaced the subfloor and made the vinyl all one piece from the piece that drops down in the door opening all the way to the side of the boat. I also made a new vanity to make more storage and to have a bigger sink. ( I changed the water system over to a pressurized hot and cold one the first year I owned the boat) I also removed the upper rounded thing at the cieling and built a cabinet for more storage. Everything looks like it was installed by the factory and it is built better than the factory. I redid the gally to make the upper cabinet usable for storage. I moved the radio out to the cockpit by the grab handle. and had a new breaker panel custom built by BASS PRODUCTS to better fit the cabinet. I also raised the cabinet about 3 inches to make the counter space more usable. I also put a bigger sink in. I now have a large storage space in the cabinet where their wasn't any. I put on IMCO 2 inch shorties this spring. I am thinking on going to 540's this winter that put out 700 HP to see a top speed of 85 mph ( hopefully)

Kelley-- Did the double cup on the props help with bow lift also
I am running 28 BRAVO 4 blades at 5100 rpm or labbed 26's BRAVO 4 blades at 5700rpm -- both props get me to 77mph gps

Keith 09-20-2002 11:19 PM

Holy Cow!! We have to talk. :D Some of the things you did are things I wanted to do this winter. Instead I'm upgrading to 450HP 502's probably in a few weeks. Funny though, I wanted to re-config the cabin from the V-Berth back, new cabinets to make more room for storage, add pressurized faucets, etc. Sounds like you've been there, done that. I'll look you up one day for advice and experienced comments. I'm going to try and take some pics next weekend for you. I'd like to see how you did your cabin if you have any shots. I'm almost certain the cabins are similar, it would be very helpful for me to see what you did. There's so much wasted space in there, could really be so much better if I can do it right.

The double cup only improved my hole shot, didn't notice any change in lift or bow attitude at all. I was blowing out rather easily almost every time I came up on plane. I don't have the arch, don't run with the bimini, but I sure do carry an enormous amount of gear and usually 3 to 4 people on board. I always start the day with 200 gallons of fuel, and rarely get below 100 gallons in the tank before I refill. So she's pretty heavy, but rides like a caddy. :)

I've been told I should try out 22 pitch 4 blades next year, have to see if there's a budget left for them. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with the 3 blades overall.

Tinkerer 09-21-2002 03:29 PM

KELLEY -- Here is a link to the pictures of the mods I made to my cabin.

Keith 09-21-2002 06:04 PM

Wow, what a beautiful job! Great pics of the areas you improved. Wait till next week when I show you mine, what a difference 2 years made. Mine is identical in design/layout with the exception of another cabinet, but with cheesy colors, black cabinets where you have white, etc. Cheesy material where it appears you have leather.

I definitely want to touch base with you about the materials, sources of materials, tips, tricks and traps, etc. I'll have some pics next weekend, went on the Island Run today and tomorrow looks like rain. :( Nice job on the cabin.

Kentz 09-21-2002 06:43 PM

Alan4, if you ran into him on the river and its got a light gray/silver fade side (good looking boat). I must have the only 340 PQ 496HO'S that can run 90+

I know for SURE he doesn't run 80, he was 2-3 boat-lenghts behind me from Coney to Schmidt Field (5-6 miles):D :D :D

Kentz 09-21-2002 06:53 PM

ps: it is a 31/500's must run 76-78 ish

Keith 09-21-2002 07:01 PM

340 PQ?

Tinkerer 09-21-2002 07:46 PM

KELLEY-- I love to build things and improve on what is there. All three cabinets were built from scratch by me. It was not a cheep venture. The new breaker panel by itself cost $600 just for the metal front and one of the meters and some hardware. It was built by BASS PROD. who built the original panel ( It was a one off custom built and it cost that way-but I wanted it my way) Redoing the gally cost better than $1200 just for pieces and parts. Redoing the head cost over $500. And a lot of hours. The only thing that got reused was the toilet and the push button for the toilet. And sorry to say it's not leather it's just vinyl but it does look great.

Talk about not being worth someone's time...........WOW, HEADS UP!!!! Relax a little, will ya. Servants??? Geeeeez, I guess your 63 year old ass ain't familiar with slang terms, I was just asking a question, glad to see plenty of others recognized this as a rational and normal and accepted and humorous way for guys to communicate within the gender. Whether you are 13 or 63, I would address you all the same here on OSO. In my wildest dreams I can't imagine ever taking offense to this. Oh well, there is one in every crowd. Sorry if you took this wrong, now, back to the fun stuff.........

Kentz, this one has a green/blue/aqua collor pattern. Sharp looking. The guy was super cool, infact we sat around and bs'ed for a while, but the numbers seemed a little wicked for sure. I would have liked to make a run up the river, but we were docked at Waterfront at about midnight.:D :D

Thanks fellas for the info, sorry I wasn't able to check back in earlier....Later, Allan4

No WAY is a 31 Scarab going to go 90 unless you gutted it and cut the deck off !!!

My friend Lenny has a 31 Larry Smith boat with N/A 565's , boxes no cabin , light layup (formerly the Patriot Wave "B" boat) that ran 96.
His girlfriend has a 96 31 Scarab Thunder with warmed over 502's (solid rollers, Cmi's, Dart intakes, 1050's) that runs 80 on a good day.
Another friend has a 94 31 Scarab with 502 MPI's that runs 72
Another friend has a 92(?) with 502 Carb motors and that runs 70
And finally another friend has a 95 31 Thunder with 350's that runs 72

These speeds are GPS , taking under normal boating conditions... coolers, few people , and gas

29scarab 09-26-2002 12:34 PM

26scarab,

I'm not sure if the guy meant the boat in the 90's as speed, or if he is talking the 1990's as in year.

I didn;'t understand which one he meant.

Your right about the speed thing though!!

:D :D

Allan4 09-26-2002 06:35 PM

Mike J, okay, now I'm more confused than ever:D

Glad to see you were just kidding around, I spend about 3/4 of my life screwing off. However, if you read your post it sounds like you were giving me a mouth full. Seemed a little odd to react as such....now it makes sense.......call me the dumb ass:D :D

26, I think you win the award for having the most friends with Scarabs......:D I thought the dude was a little loopy when he was rattling this off, but he was pretty cool so I decided not to make a big deal about it. Besides, there are all kinds of guys running around claiming speeds that are bogus, why just crap out one of them. Thanks guys, Allan4
