31 Scarab Viper total redo
5 Attachment(s)
Two years ago I purchased this boat after passing on it in 1990 due to the expensive Kevlar composite laminate upgrade charge. Do to its cost I am sure there are no more than two or three with this option that makes it lighter and stronger. I stripped this boat to bare fiberglass. With the help of Victory Marine in Dickinson Texas I replaced a couple engine room stringers (transom was in great shape),fixed any areas that needed attention then totally re gel coated (NO Paint) entire boat, all heat shrinked new wiring and rigged to race boat standards. I finnished it 2 months ago and been enjoying now for 20 hours with no issues.
Here is where I started |

Looks incredible. Is this one ever going to find it's way to Bflo?
|
Not sure. The Powerplay will be for sure
|
Thank you it was definitely a long labor of love.
|
Very nice boat!!! Nice to see a fellow Texan too!
|
Awesome boat. Great job man. Looks modern!
|
Love those Scarab vipers. Good for you. Enjoy it.
|
Phenomenal job on the resto. Never seen one in person, but love the flat deck.
|
Fantastic work! Nothing better looking than an all white flat deck Scarab. Totally shows it's great lines!
(I'm a little bias) |
Looks great, another classic saved and beautifully restored.
I wish you'd started this thread 2 years ago so I could have seen all the pics and dramas along the way. You've done a perfect magician's act, shown us the start and the finish but nobody knows how the Hell you got there. :cartman: If that makes me sound selfish, it's because I am! Great job, supported by 'likes' and comments from some pretty clued up guys. RR |
I had the privilege of seeing this up close and personal today. Almost got a ride in if it wasn't for monsoon 2016! The craftsmanship and detailing are impeccably executed. Thanks again for your hospitality and inspiration for my Bullet project today Les!

Beautiful so detailed. Did you shoot the gel coat or myltiple layers by roller and then sand and polished it? How many gallons did it take?
|
I love that model! Not to many around. You really have something you can be very proud of!
|
standingBuffalo thank you for taking the time to come look at my Scarab and the kind words . I to enjoyed visiting with someone that has the same passion for keeping alive performance boats of the past. Like I said many times it is a long tedious labor of love. But if you take the time to do everything the way you want with no rushed decisions or make do's it will make you just stare and smile. I have restored many as my hobby over the last 35 years and just sometimes have to set them aside for a while to rest and think on it. Please do not hesitate to reach out if I can help in some way. Look forward to boating Lanier, upbstate NY, LOTO, Texas with our VINTAGE machines. Take care

PG-13 I like that does it ever get R rated? The glass team I used does a lot of work on special laminate boats (Skaters,Cigs,MTI,Donzi Nortech) They took many steps in a process that took 6 months but did spray it. I will find out the gallons.

The owner of INXS is a friend. Being parked next to INXS for a year motivated my Scarab to grow up one day and be a big mean machine. Lol

Alright guys don't laugh ( I'm old) but I have never posted one of my redo's before and have followed OSO forever. I really appreciate everyone's positive feed back. It makes your day. I want to say thanks to everyone for their likes and want to respond in the proper way. What would that be? Thanks

Nice resto on a great boat, sounds like you know how to do things properly and you've now got the pride of ownership. Pay no attention to my dig (or any other) about not posting lots of pics and details along the way, I'm pleased you shared a few pics and enjoyed doing it. :) Thank-you. RR |
No need for thanks. We thank you for posting your restoration. Your pics and info of the resto is such a major contribution to most of us. Now enjoy.

Boat looks incredible! Nice work!
|
Wow!!! The boat turned out great -- I would take your boat over many newer boats!
|
This boat looks amazing
you did a great job! Is it still for sale i also have a 31’ scarab viper that I have just purchased and am about to do a complete build. As of right now it is just a haul. So would you recommend I build it or would you be interested in a new clean canvas to paint yet another great viper. I would love the opportunity to build one as you did but I don’t have the time nor the money nor knowledge. All I have is a busy friend/mechanic to help me and honestly I can’t afford to screw up a build. |
