scarab kv ssm#5
Just purchased my ssm 5's from gary kollofski for my kv this week, great guy to deal with . Who on here is running 5's with boxes no notch on a 80's scarab kv non Larry Smith ?
I will be running 900hp blower motors bam super cyborg trannies would like some input on your drive location setup and mph numbers running same power and or problems you experienced, any information would greatly be appreciated . Mark |
Sounds like a lot of fun. Looking forward to this...

What boxes are you running. If they are the mercury adjustable boxes I would start with the drives 1" below the bottom with the boxes in the center hole. That way you can adjust up or down and inch. The 38 KV I raced back in the day liked the drives an inch above the bottom but is was super light.

HI Heath, boy you really ripped her apart going to be brand new ,the flat decks are worth redoing such nice lines on them . CIG 3 yes they are the Mercury adjustable boxes , I had a similar thread few months ago about x dimension on the kv with #3's . Team Archer (Dan) chimed in and suggested 3" below and 17.5"-18" prop since the bow is heavier . I have spacers that I got with the drives so I think I am going to set the "x" 3 below with 1" spacer installed and the gimble on bottom hole of the boxes so I can pull spacer out and move gimble up when I test props . Thanks for the input .

Mark are you running number Vs or IIIs ? the number Vs can run a lot higher than the IIIs We are running a 79 Larry Smith with VIs at 1 inch above the bottom with the number Vs on boxes I would start at 1 inch above the bottom at neutral on the boxes witch allows you to move up or down. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call. Regards Dan

Thanks Dan for letting me pick your brain on the drive set up .

Have you set your boat up with your number V's yet? The set up, I'm about to install is very similar to yours, other than I have a notched transom. If you set it up 1" above the transom, I'm curious how it worked for you.

Rigging transom this winter i will post pics of my work

Were/are you running intercoolers on your blower set-up? I received my engines last week and I'm having doubts they will fit under the races hatches. I had planned on raising the X 3", in order to get the prop shaft 1" above the bottom, but now I'm just hoping I can get the race hatches closed with the engines at the stock location. With the adjustable boxes I should be able to get the shafts 1" below the hull, which won't be ideal, but at this point, it is what it is.

Just rebuild your dog houses taller nd no one will no the difference.

I was thinking about doing that. Ha, I'll add that to the list of projects.

What else are you going to do this winter

i am not using tthe factory race hatches using pro stock style hatches that came with the boat so there won't be a problem when using chillers . Starting my x at -1 " center hole on boxes and going from there . I bought 1" and 2" spacers along with my ssm 5's |

Hey Dan, my drives are even with the bottom with a spacer on them. Did you guys ever do any testing without the spacers or do you figure it was well sorted out long before it made it's way out to you?

I believe that the boat was set up for the Catalina Ski Race. That's why it has the spacer in the drive to keep the rooster tail down and to get on plane faster. I don't remember that was a long time ago and we were still racing back then and testing 2 to 3 boats a week.

His name was Jody Martin. the last time I worked on that boat was 2004. Looked back old invoices we never played with drive spacers just trying to get motors running good.
