DON"T CHANGE IT! Joe is epic the way he is!
3 layers of 1708. and a complete new paint scheme, Sorry everybody
Joe was a cool scheme but its better to see it redone with a happy owner using the boat rather than the alternative of sitting in a field or fed through a grinder..It's only paint if there is another owner in the future..
Congrat's to the new owner - great project. |
Looks like it will be plenty strong Dan.
Home stretch with the major glass work then we can start to put it all back together again.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...1201fcea4e.jpg Blocked out and ready for new Gelcote. |
gelcote done
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...11c41c4564.jpg ready to polish and lay out drives Its time to start putting it back together |
quite a good pace for such a resto! what drive again will go on it? Twin 6's if i recall right??
yes it gets a full staggered number 6 set up
cant wait to see the install!
Gimbals are going back together laying out transom today to start cutting.
Whose idea was it to paint drives red Dan? I bet it wasn’t you. 😀
Have you considered painting the transom only Black? Seems popular these days & makes some sense.... hides the soot!
I think I remember seeing Smokin Joe on the Chesapeake once many years ago. Such a cool boat
I do as the customer wants. Here are some other progress pictures

She’s going to have a beautiful a$$ when you get finished with her. Keep up the good work, there are a lot of us that appreciate fine craftsmanship!!
Same question as jeff32: Is there a standard center for staggered motors or is it all hull variable? I'm also sure you've been around this block a few times and know what works. :ernaehrung004:
I've and tested lots of different setups over the years and know what has worked in the past and then I go just a little farther every time. I never know until I start the testing if I got it right. But I have a pretty good batting average!
Not to be cliche but...experience is the best teacher. I look forward to the final exam.
More progress today
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5644c394ff.jpg GIMBAL NUMBER 1 https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c61f7621c9.jpg GIMBAL NUMBER 2 https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...7abc801b34.jpg INNER TRANSOM PLATES https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5ca93249b6.jpg TEST FIST FIRST MOTOR MEASURE FOR MOUNTS AND ORDER MATERIAL |
I've done some test fisting before , but never on my motors...
Great progress! Doing the engine and drive aligment is a pain in the azz, at least for me... i remember spending hours and hours trying to align the engine so the drive shaft would slip in smooth...
how are you going to do it? Not many ways to do it you are going to tell me... but you might have some trick to share! I will have to do it again on my chriscat when i get there! nice progress! Love following your tread! |
The trick is getting the motor hung flat and level. Then make sure the boat is the same flat and level. both of these motors are drive line. In 93 they didn't have a plug in number 6 yet.
Did you spray gelcote in the bilge or is that paint? Deciding which way to best finish my project.
Thanks, Todd |
43’ Scarab
Looks like a great job ! Do you have some sea teks for sale ?
We use Valspar polyurethane in all our engine rooms. and yes I still have the Seatec's for sale.
Got a little more done this week .
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a701801788.jpg Rear motor mounts https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b6be095aac.jpg Rear motor in https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...67604db878.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b02e871763.jpg Both motors in and headers on https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...aaa1258339.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...d51c73f76a.jpg header alignment is good front motor is 5 inches lower than rear to get header at the same height. |
How does that figure into the gimbal alignment with it being 5" lower?
Drive shaft between engine and inner transom plate must be the answer i guess?
The forward motor is 48 inches farther forward than the rear motor so the drive shaft takes up the angle. the 5 inches is the difference between the heights of the headers on the rear to the front motor.
the dash is getting all redone the owner was out from IL. and finished stripping the dash hardware. It is going to be white gel coat instead f the black padded dash.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...482e184843.jpg Have to start by filling all of the holes 24 small guages and a host of other things. |
White will look good
Great job Dan!! You are incredibly fast Without sacrificing quality.
Nice!!!!!
Owner from IL, will this by chance be an ozarks boat ???
