38KV - Pulling the tank?

First time long time here...anybody out there in the 38KV Scarab world know how to access and clean a 88' 38KV gas tank without having to pull it??

If you remove the access panel off the cockpit floor you can see the the top of tank. You can then remove the float/gauge sending unit and remove it to see in the tank with a camera on a wand. You’ll only be able to see the rear of the tank because of the baffles. If you gave to remove the tank, it’s going to be foamed in place so removing it is going to be cutting the foam with a sawzall and prying the tank up. Which is not a small chore.

Yes...I was afraid of that. I pulled the cover and the inside needs to be completely cleaned. Tank has not been used in over 13 years. Looks like the tank is coming out.

THANKS!!

Some solvent and a trailer ride to slosh it, drain, and repeat a couple times can really clean it up. Then rig up a fuel polishing setup.

How would I drain it? Using a siphon pump system?

My first thought would be some hose connected to one of the fuel pickup straws, and an electric fuel pump pumping thru a hose to a container outside the boat. That'd get most of it out anyway.

Yes..ok...because that's how I emptied the old gas out of it was with a siphon pump. I've already committed to removing the tank for optimum cleaning results.

Be sure you know what you're committing to before you do it. :)

I use a carter electric fuel pump connected to the fuel pickup, wired to a 12v battery. IMO your tanks would have to be really nasty or damaged to warrant pulling them vs flushing/polishing the fuel and keeping good filters on the system. After a season or two if you run a ton of fuel through them they will be even cleaner.

yup, through the drain plug or through hull into a container.

There are services / companies that will come to you and professionally clean out marine fuel tanks. they will have a wand which can "scrub" the bottom of the tank.

This will get it all out and filtered thru a Raycor filter system. then they can bring a few 55 gal of AV gas and fill you up so you know it's good and fresh. It's a few hundred bucks versus pulling tanks. Takes about 4 hours total.

Ask me how I know..... done it twice but still went thru about 12 filters for two years. Something was caked to the bottom of the tank.

That's great!! Thank you for the suggestion!!
