28 excell side grills

I decided to get rid of the side grills and all the s.s. rails on the boat . but I cant seem to find a vent to cover the hole that the grill was covering. I would like to just put the side grills back on for now but like a dumb ass I tossed them in the dumpster:rolleyes: I am looking to have a friend of mine make a vent for me on his cnc machine that he just got but by the time he gets it working and the time to do it , that will be weeks from now.

so does anyone have a set of grills that they took off there excel or know where I can find vent to cover the hole???

I looked for vents in CP performance, eddie marine, rex marine, boat US. they dont have anything that will fit.

Yes, I've got a set from when I filled those in. Give me an e-mail,
[email protected]. On a side note after I went through all the trouble of changing them I saw one with them anodized in bright red looked trick. Mike
PS Your not that far of a drive.

I need to add air intakes to the sides of my boat. The engines badly need more air and I can't keep raising the engine hatch ( I blew it over last year ) Anyone have any suggestions? I would like to have some made but can't come up with anything good. I like the looks of the ones on the newer SCARABS but they are cheep plastic and that won't work.

SCARAB3DMC-- I still don't have the boat togeather because the business is doin TOO GOOD. I spent most of the weekend working on the yard. ( having a major problem with grubs )
Dug up ALL the bad spots and reseeded them and put down GRUBEX and Diazanon. I got all the parts back from the paint shop friday. Hope to have the transom assemblies togeather this week and then next weekend put the engines back in.

Tinkerboater,,

I know the ones on my 1996 29 work really well. You might try to get a hold of one and see what it looks like. I know it puts a ton of air in mine.

Hot Boat 06-02-2003 10:24 PM

NJScarab If you are willing to sell the old grills I am very interested. Please call me when you get a chance. 914-906-8091 How far are you from Upper Saddle river ?????

SCARAB3DMC How you been . Your boat is looking good. I just wish mine got to see the water as much as yours:rolleyes: Well an intake valve got stuck in the guide and it ended up crashing into the # 8 piston. More that likely I got water in the motor in order for this to happen. the piston is fine and the head is at the shop. I just got word today that they want to replace all the intake valves. so tomorrow I will pull off the other head and get that one done as well. Now I need to see where I got water in to the motor. It's either a leak in the exhaust or the inter-cooler. But the good thing is that after 3 years of working on the boat it is almost totally done to the point that I am very happy with it. I just never thought i would see the end to this project. As long as the rain holds off for a few days I should be done by the end of the weekend. Ill be sue to post some photos.

Louvers and Vents

Tinkerboater and Hot Boat,
If you are still looking for louvers you might want to try www.lewismarine.com
Go to their page, click "search catalog",
Manufacturer is "Attwood"
Figure 6005, Stock Number 1488, about $36.
Collector box, same figure, stock number 1487B, about $11.

Another louver:
Manufacture: Attwood
Figure 6006
Stock Number 1493, about $30.
Collector box same figure, stock number 1342, about $15.

Another Louver
Manufacturer: Sea Dog
Figure 354
Stock number 331290, 5 vent style, about $24
Stock number 331300, for the 3 vent style, about $18

To look at the item click the icon at the right of the item listing
I only included the Stainless Steel in this group as was mentioned you didn't want plastic. The collector boxes are all ABS plastic.

The price is from a 2001 catalog I have with me, I don't have a newer catalog but I don't imagine the price has changed much.

If you need other (plastic) numbers let me know.
Hope this gives you some more options

Good luck

ScarabDriver Thanks for the help. unfortunately I didn't find any that will fit. the opening that I must fill is. 26" x 4 3/4" but the overall hight of the vent cant be more that 5 3/4".
I looked all over and I cant find anything that will fit.

The best bet for me is just to find the original set of grills.

Steve,

I'm getting ready to take a drill or hole saw to mine. :) In your picture where the radar arch comes down and meets the gunwhale, there's a scooped area that runs up under the cap where your handrail and canvas snaps are. I haven't done it yet because I'm considering the path of water when I'm running. Might have to do something to the stern, or rear of sunpad if/when I redo that next year.

Alternatively, some of the engine hatches have vents installed to the front/bottom of the vinyl pad.

By the way, I purchased 2 of the windshield connectors and she sent me all 4. I told her I only wanted 2 and to keep the others for your order. PM me with your mailing address, I'll send you one.

Alternatives for the 34', not sure about the 28' though, I don't have any pictures of my old Excel :(

This is an integrated design on a 38' if you're doing a new engine hatch sunpad. Could also mount something like this to the stern side which might be preferable.

Tinkerer 06-07-2003 11:27 PM

I have looked at this problem from all angles. My boat already has air intakes where your picture is circled. It needs more.
I will probably have something made out of stainless and have it powder coated white. I want something louvered to go above the rub rail but it will have to be tapered to fit the location where the newer boats have the plastic one. I just don't like the looks of the stock one. I even thought of removing the stock outlets and having a small scoop made to fit but that would look cool only to a few people and would hurt resale.

Steve,

I have to add holes on mine then, the scooped area is closed.

The original bow scoop design was smart, but implementation failed. On the bow I have two scoops just ahead of the windshield (see pict below). Dryer vent hose runs from these scoops, through the cockpit gunwhales and into the bilge. I imagine the hose broke in it's first season when it filled up with water and sagged. Consequently it pulls air from inside the gunwhales, 3" hoses, which isn't enough for WOT. Then again, I'm rarely running above 3500 so it just hasn't been a priority.

I'd be interested in what you finally come up with as a solution.

Tinkerer 06-08-2003 11:16 PM

I also have those louvers but they are not open and are show only. I have a lot of ideas but havn't had the time to come up with anything yet.

Hey Paul, Talked to your bud in Clifton last night and gave him directions and left the grills out for him. Sorry it took so long but had a little job trouble this week, laid off to be exact. It's funny how those things happen just as your health benifits kick in? Last time I work for the mob (frankie jr,frankie sr, big frankie, tony sr, tony the grinch etc.) but I guess that can be expected working in northern jersey!

NJScarab 06-18-2003 11:10 AM

Paul and Chris,
I can't find either of your #'s, the grills are still sitting on the top of the driveway behind the black truck. Oh and paul this weekend try and stay off rocks......................Mike
