22' Scarab guys ring in
1 Attachment(s)
I just purchased a 98 22’ Scarab. I really love everything about the boat except the dash. I find it to be bland at best. Has anyone done any unique modifications to improve the appearance? I will soon be replacing all of my gauges, and switches. The fake carbon fiber bezel on mine is cracked and I know better than to try and find a replacement from Wellcraft. I’m thinking making one from stainless steel or Aluminum would look cool. If anyone of you 22’ Scarab guys have a cool looking dash (or any other modifications) then share it with us. It has been too quiet here in the Scarab section.
Thanks Roby |
gaffrig by livorsi www.livorsi.com has a ton of bezels in dferent colors adn sizes. Prolly be cheaper than have your own custom made.
if your changing out your guages the carbon fiber autometers are pretty trick looking. |
heck, i wish i knew that you wanted one, I am selling mine cheap! I have only used it twice this year.
98 too. under 200 hrs lots of engine mods, under 20 grand!!! By the way, dont even try to hot rod that engine with those heads!!! |

Well, your in luck! I have a 94 that i too thought the dash was boring. I removed the aluminum panels and sprayed them metallic green (the same as my engine) and then I flicked white tremclad onto it with a brush, and then clear coated the dash. I installed white anodized bezels behind the original gauges and the results are great!

Roby, Welcome aboard! I think all Scarab's come with sh!tty dash panels. I took mine over to a company called Gartner Coatings (281-997-3500 ask for Devin Myers). They can do a couple things (paint or powercoat your dash panel. Here's a picture of mine afterwards. Hope this helps.

P.S. -- Gartner Coatings are the guys who paint all the channel markers/buoys etc... So they're guaranteed not to rust/corrode etc.. for 10 yrs. I also had them paint my trailer. Sorry no photo's to share. It looks great and is also guaranteed not to rust for 10 yrs!

I have the same Faux Carbon Fiber. A little while back I think saw in Hot Boat, sheets of real Carbon Fiber. Its down on my list of things, but I'm not there yet. Just an option. Doug

OK 22 scarab guys,
This boat is on my maybe list when I go shopping, How do they handle the rough stuff??? Whats the deadrise??? |
I have a 97 22, I don't have much to compare it to. I haven't had it in the ocean, only a lake. I feel it's much better than my Checkmate 185 Pulse, but thats not really fair. The wellcraft stuff I have say's it 20 Degrees. Doug

Hey thanks for the pics. I really want to do something different with mine. Another question: I was trying to research the original new buying price of a 98 22' Scarab with 454 EFI and tabs. Anyone remember?

Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
My 98 22 is at the detail shop. I'll take some pictures when I get it back. My dash looks great - Gafrig (by livorsi) gauges, controls, and steering wheel. The set-up is clean and sharp.
|
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
The boat handels the rough stuff surprisingly well. It flys flat and lands soft - most of the time. But it can make my wife cry.

Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
I just bought a 95 Scarab 22 with a 454. Is there anything out there to help with high speed handling, it seems kinda squirrely.

Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
i have a question for all the 22 scarab guys... what type of prop do you run? if you use a 3 blade, do you have alot of blow out or cavitation? i run a 25 mirage and the blow out is unreal on take offs.. any input from you would be great
|
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
I run a 25 mirage plus and don't have blow out problems. Of all the props I've tried mine seems to run the best with the Mirage. If your prop has been repaired before, they might not have it right? I'd try another one.
|
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Sorry, I'm new to this...what do you mean by blow out?
|
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
My Scarab had this problem until I had Darin at Houston Prop convert my Mirage to the Accelerator. Works great now.
Roby |
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Roby,
I had my prop (mirage plus 25) done by Darin at HP and I did not gain any top end. 62.6 is the best run on the GPS. This was about the top end before I sent it to Darin. What are you running? Should I send it back to Darin. I was hoping for a nice round 66 or at least 64. |
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
I put a 4-blade Bravo1 on and really like how it works. I have to work at it to make it blow out. I went with a 22", I should have went with a 24". With the 22" 4950@60mph. 13% slip, Rpm is to high for a stock 7.4. I use it for a all around prop. Water skiing ect. but not for top end. Doug

Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
I had a 22 scarab w/454 running bravo1 24" that Darin labbed. Boat ran approx 3 mph better and stuck to water like glue.

Ccs, You said you gained 3mph,what is your new top speed and rpm with the labbed 24 Bravo? Thanks, Doug

Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Hello Guys,
I have a scarab 22/96. When I bought the boat it came with a 7.4ltr, but It wasn't enough. So I bought a new 502mpi and upgrade the ecm, the headers, flame arrestor and the lower unit 2" shorter. All I can tell you is that when the engine was out of the box, I used to hit 70mph, after all the money spent I'm still hitting 70mph. Now the only option is to put a whipple charger, but the problem is there isn't enough front clearance to put crank pulley. Any ideas ?? |
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in

the rear bench is screwed down to the wooden floor with just a few wood screws. you might gain a little space by trying to move it forward a little and modifying it so the hatch will still close. the bulkhead to the front of the engine can also be cut out carefully in the center to gain some space, it will not weaken the structure (its quite thin and weak anyway). i think it can be done. good luck peter |
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
That thing should fly with the whipple. Keep us posted with results or any problems you run into. Definitely going to have to do some modifying in front of the engine because there's no room there.

Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Syclone,
the problem is not the rear bench, it's the rear bulkhead that there is under the bench. When I inspected it properly, I found out that there is the fuel tank just behind it. Guy's note that who is running a 502 mpi in raw water, check every season the intake manifold cause it tends to leak. Mine did and now I am rebuilding the engine, and since the need for speed is always on my mind, I fitted a new cam and a set roller rockers. As soon I try it, I will tell you the result. Anyone, can tell me what is the maximun hull speed for a 22' ? Herman |
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Do you need to re-torque the intake manifold every season? Where does it leak? As far as speed goes, probably going to get a little scary in the upper 70's. Need to balance everything just right. (Batteries, anchors, gear etc.) I run 74gps with a stock 502mpi and a worked 25p Mirage Plus at 4800rpm. Hope to pick up a little more with some prop tweaking.

i know the tank is behind that bulkhead, but it depends how close it actually is. i ripped out the floor, so i know the center compartment is larger than the tank itself. maybe the tank in your boat is far enough to the front so there´s a little space to gain there. if you dont mind the extra work, you might rip out the floor, too, it is not too much work (lazily glassed and stapled to the stringers) and also move the tank and then the center section of that bulkhead forward. i poured polyurethane foam around the tank because it was only held in place by two wooden crossmembers which were already loose and i wasn´t comfortable thinking about what a full tank might do after a jump or something if it wasn´t properly held in place. renewing the floor might be a good idea anyway, since the wood is poor quality and thin (what you might have noticed when you sit in one of the seats and try to rock around a little: the whole floorboard is moving). games without frontiers... peter |
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Can you send me some pictures of this floor project if you took any? I have put mine up for the summer to do just this. Looking for some advice before I rip up the carpet.
e-mail as many pics as you want to send, no limits [email protected] Thanks Peter Roby |

Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Peter,
Can you send some pics too, of the floor project. it would be of great help. [email protected] Thanks in advance Herman |
Re: 22' Scarab guys ring in
Steve,
it's the intake itself that leak! when you take it out you will notice that it has two water stoppers, and the cyclinder heads has the water holes. Now the problem is that while running the engine the water will be hitting the aluminiun stopper and by time it will corrode, throwing the water bit by bit into the sump. All you have to do is to check it out every season, to check out that the stopper is not corroded. Herman |
