Factory Scarab Vents
Hi Shawn -
I hate to break the bad news but I tried to get prices and availability on side vents for our 29ft. Scarab from 3 different sources and NOT ONE of them returned my request. I've since spoken to another Scarab owner who was also looking for vents for his 29ft. Scarab and he's has had no response from anyone either. It appears that it may be impossible to get the vents. Another post about the vents for 29ft. Scarabs was active a few months back. I offered to see what it would cost to get some vents manufactured out of aluminum for our boats. I contacted the people who initially showed interest with the cost I thought it would take to get these vents. Everyone responded that they thought the price was too high. I dropped the project at that point but have resumed the for the process of making myself one set of aluminum vents. Yeah, they are going to cost me, but I'll never have to worry about needing them again. When I called asking about the factory vents, they requested the hull number leading me to believe that the vents were different even in the 29ft. line over the years. I don't have any good information to back that up. I've taken the dimensions from our vents and will be making a set to match them with a couple of exceptions. The new ones will be thinner by 1/4 inch than factory to save some money on material and also reduce the interference when docked. The lower profile will alter the slope of the fore and aft ends of the vents slightly also. Our Scarab is a '94. Wish I had better news but it doesn't look good for factory assistance on parts. Appreciate the reply. I had already bought one set a long time ago when I bought the boat. I should have bought a couple instead of the one set I bought. I guess I'm going to have to do some investigation work on this one. I remember at one time in Austin there was a boating center that still sold them, but its been a few years back. You know as well as I do a lot has happened since then with Scarab. Thanks for your time! Maybe we can get together this summer if I'm around!! Shawn |
Austin Scarab dealer
Hi Shawn -
One of the places I contacted was the dealer in Austin and ... no response. I also called another dealer that had been recommended and same thing happened. I even gave Wellcraft a shot at it and no response from them either (not that that surprised me). Ok, let me know if you have any luck. I'm very curious as to the price of these grills from ANY source. I told everyone that it looked like the aluminum grills would cost about 250.00 each to make. I had heard that the plastic grills were 160.00 each and cannot confirm that info. One thing is for sure ... because of the way the grills are positioned on the side of the boat, the plastic ones will constantly be in harms way. I've tried every different kind of fender there is and none of them will totally stop the eventual impact of the grill with a dock. Like I said in the previous post, I am proceeding with having one set made for myself. Once they are done, I'll take some pictures and post them here for everyone to see. The grills will be very near the factory grills in appearance, made from 6061-T6 alumiunum (aircraft grade), and machined on a CNC machining center. None of those things are inexpensive - hence the 250.00 per grill price. If you do happen to find someone who has the factory plastic grills and they are not totally outrageous in price, I'd recommend buying an extra set knowing full well they may become unavailable in the future. I'm hoping to have the aluminum grills completed in a couple of weeks. Ryan |
The last set I bought were right about 130.00 for both. Of course, then again it was afew years back. I'm sure they are probably more now. I'm going to do some researching with the time I have off and see what I come up with. If I find anything I'll let ya know!!
Later bro! |
Call them direct and get the part #, then call South Austin Marine (or other Scarab/Wellcraft Dealer and ask them to have them drop shipped directly to you. That's what I just did.
