who's working on their Pachanga this winter?
so what work has everyone got planned for their pachanga's this winter? boat is all wrapped up right now, but soon as I get some warm days some work begins. here is my list:
-reupholster rear seat -remove the oxidation in the gel (I hate pink):D -have alpha gone through (loose gimbal, and clicking noise) -change to a 3 blade Mirage 23p -repair stress cracks -new Pachanga logo's -complete polish on entire boat -bleed trailer brakes/replace fluid -replace battery boxes if my alpha turns out toast I may see if I can't go Alpha SS:evilb: but I may wait on that along with some other future motor upgrades till next year |
I did not know they put the Alpha on a 91 unless its a small block?
I posted a ALPHA SS here on the boards a few months. Went within a week for $1,600. |
Good luck on your rear seat ....if that includes the bolster ...when I took mine out, the wood was rotten....what A Pain...Sea Ray made it out of 8 pieces of irregular shaped wood. This was bolted, bracketed, glued and nailed together.
When I tryed to remove the vinyl and foam from the wooden frame it kinda just fell apart..I attempted to use the old parts as templates but the first one I made didnt fit very well. So using the boat as the template I made parts from luan and then tranfered them over to marine plywood. Well now I have an all new interior (carpet included). Many hours of labor and about 2k later. Good luck B.A.D. |
work on pachag's
Im going to do some thing really diffrent......leave it alone. (ha ha)
Almost done with sanding, can't wait for spring to paint. BLCKKAT, lets see some pics when finished. Good luck on all the projects! |

Good luck B.A.D. also had a nice day saturday to start wet sanding and polishing. got one side of the boat done. never done anything like that before....I actually was successful, glossy gel, no pink, and I didn't burn the paint or gel!:D does anybody know where I can get Pachanga Vinyl's for the port and starboard side? I need to remove them so I can remove the oxidation around them, but hate to remove them without knowing I'll be able to replicate them. |
I R. Headers,Full duelram hydraulic steering, putting the trim tabs back on, and this spring the prop testing begins! :D
|
PACHANGA, what r u using for tabs
|
My guy told me the original tabs should be OK....Alot cheaper to give them a try 1st since all I needed to reinstall were the actuaters and switch...going ahead and putting indicaters in too. The original tabs are somin like 9" X 18". They are stainless steel. I was ready ta go with a better set... but we will see! :D
Thought I would add...the former owner took them off because they were slowing the boat down. Think I got enough horses now so it won't be an issue! :D |
I bought this "hole in the water" back in last May...I have been working on it ever since. The prevoius owner did little to maintain the poor thing. I have always liked P-22's since they came out and have been obsessed with getting one for years (like 20). Right now I'm into the engine (SBC). When I bought it the owner told me he had replaced the engine the season before. Which I believe he did....But, after I brought it home from RI (I live in MD) and began running it in the back yard ...It just seemed like it was running a little warm....So I pulled the T-stat hsg and found considerable Corrosion inside..While there i noticed that the intake had been flaking in the water ports...So I decided to pull it down for further inspection...When I removed the intake and filpped it over there was some rust and pittng on the bottom side.. I took a screw driver and lightly tapped that area and knocked out a 2" hole. There was also some anti-freeze in the engine valley and I'm sure in the pan...There goes 60.00 worth of Mobil 1.
This is just the continuning saga of many found issues...including automotive water pump, loose oil drain plug in the pan, three spark plugs that were loose including one that was only at few threads from blowing out...all plugs were black form a poor performing Q-Jet....I am now installing the following new items Eldelbrock Air Gap performer, Holley 4160,alumunum exhaust manifolds and risers, marine water pump, and thermostat housing. I know it will all be worth it when it's done. I'll know exactly what I have. B.A.D. |
Two B.A.D we have alot in common! I too have had an obsession with Pachanga's! I remember seeing the boat in a showroom back in 86 and fell in love and decided I'd have to get one some day...and I was only 8!!
I think I'm the 5th owner of my "money pit" from what I can tell its been a rollercoaster ride of owners. Some have maintained, improved, and fixed things properly, while others neglected, abused, or halfassed it. my whole motor is a question mark. how warm was your motor running? I run about 160-170 I did notice that when I pulled the plugs on the block one side was definately flowing more then the other, tried shoving a wire around in there, but it didn't really do much. I get some slight steam out my exhaust but it bounces back and forth between sides. one trip its the port exhaust throwing steam, the next time out its the starboard  right now its just an annoyance more then anything. |
blckkat, mine was running around 190 off of well water.....and passing some steam. I just didn't feel comfortable with it. Flow does seem to be equal between sides. I am replacing my manifolds and risers just to get rid of all that weight...plus it should improve the exhaust flow. The ones I took off look to be in good shape and I hope to sell them in the future. I couldn't believe that they are true mercruiser parts. From what I can tell my boat has been in MS, CT, RI and now MD. I should have bought one in better condition but I guess I felt sorry for it. One thing about Pachanga's .....If someone asks you what kind of boat you have there are very few that haven't heard of the Pachanga.
B.A.D.:cool-smiley-027: |
ya 190 would worry me too. you'll have to keep us posted on how it turns out, I'll be anxious to see how the exhaust works out. I hear the actual hp rating aren't real big, but if you're upgrading from the original cast irons, you'll probably drop a good 80lbs. I hear upgrading to a larger flame arrestor helps a little too :cool-smiley-011: are you planning on keeping the "sea-pac" mufflers?
I think you and I are one of the few with SBC Pachanga's on here. I'll be anxious to GPS her in Spring just to see what warmed over SBC pachanga's do. one of the owners upgraded the cam, rocker arms, and intake manifold. |
To BAD, you may want to invest in "fresh water cooling" cuts on electrolosis, will keep motor a more constant temp.
Blckkat, I had the same issue w/ my manifolds EMI, changed T stat, whole nine yards...one side will always flow slightly more..Small block did it, so did the 502, as long as the temps are close it's ok. Don't feel at idle, try in N on trailer at cruising rpm. it's just the way water flows through the stat at lower rpms; it never divides evenly. A good vynal shop should be able to duplicate the " Pachanga" decal. The "sea pac" mufflers are a very efficiant can. They look silly but flow very well, give a sweet sound also. |
Rebuilding my Drives on the 1987 32" Pachanga this weekend
:hitfan:Getting ready for Spring Time Figured I should overhaul them.

My mufflers were removed when I bought the boat.....I thought it sounds pretty cool the way it is ...But, from what you guys are saying ...I might just put them back on to see what it sounds like.

I'm seriously toying with the idea of picking up an 87 22... Looks clean but not much maintenance history. Plus its a long haul to get it back home. 7.4 w/ an Alpha... Any thoughts or advice? I'm sure that I'll be working on it soon if I pull the trigger... - Chris

Two Bad,
mufflers just basically drop some dB's out, but don't kill off the v8 grumble. sort of like hooking up a set of flowmasters. here is a little compilation to give you some idea. its just a nice balance so you can hear the motor but you don't have to yell or crank the hell out of stereo when your on board. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y41...h_43ea31f7.jpg |
Blckkat: Sounds great. but, after listening to yours I don't think I want my wife to know that it could be any quieter!!! I don't want to spoil her just yet. If It is truly tooooo loud I'll put them on to soooooth the savage beast.
B.A.D.:D |
If you are running 190 you might want to back flush the oil cooler. Impeller parts could be in there.
I have a shop in town that has made multiple sets of decal's for me. I scratched them docking. Steam is no big deal, hot water mixing with cold. Mine does it on the hose, in the spring, and in the fall. Enjoy I have a 496 with no mufflers. The guy in the slip behind me alwasy had a comment. So I had a decal made for the back of the boat. IF ITS TO LOUD YOU ARE TO OLD |
I'm replacing my stock cast iron exhaust manifolds with GLM aluminum, removed mufflers and thinking about changing intakes, with twin 454s this should shave 350-400 Lbs off the ars end of my boat!!
|
1BIGJIM - Your signage is great.....Thanks for the advise on cooling but, My problems ran far deeper than that. Just about everything is new except the block and that was replaced in2006 and was neat as a pin inside. It's still heavy winter here so I won't be sure if I solved my issues for another month. New thermostat hsg, edelbrock air gap intake, holley carb, engine and outdrive water pumps, hosing, GLM exhaust manifolds it all adds up to a ton of money. Fun is expensive or maybe I should consider it therapy.:cool-smiley-027:

well, small update, upholstery is on the tail end of being finished. (pics coming soon!) I scored a good deal on a 23p mirage and I think I'll be adding a new cabin headliner to the list. Should get into the repair shop soon to take care of some stress cracks on the top deck. may delete the center safety line and hardware but I can't make up my mind if I should keep it or not. it looks sort of 80's but it's sort a signature trait of a Pachanga...any thoughts?
after talkin with the repair shop for the stress cracks it looks like we're gonna pull the liner out and reinforce the underside of the deck with some new glass when the stress cracks get repaired. was sort of hoping I wouldn't need that major of a repair, but might as well do it right. I don't know how you guys are coping, but I'm tired of having to see my boat buried in snow! I just want to get to work on it already! :angry-smiley-055: not asking much just some low 50's and sunshine |
Any of you guys doing updates or freshening, let me know.
Livorsi, Rex Marine, CP Performance and most any parts you need. Nice discount for OSO members too!! Kirk |
well finally got the seats back from upholestry, no more embroidered logo :( but I'll manage especially for not having pink cracked seats:D

Looks like you got a nice job.

That interior looks great!
|
After a winter of working on my nightmare.....I was rewarded today. The weather has finallly stablized enough to start the engine after completeing alot of work on it. It started great and ran almost perfect out of the box. Very crisp throttle response and running cool for the first time. What a differece a ton of money makes...........Oh...Did I mention how smooth it ran? I know they always run the best before they blow.....

has anyone tried removing the small ramps or built in tabs on the bottom in the rear on there 22i have a built 383 in mine and it feels like i can't get the bow up high enough without blowing the prop out of the water

After talking to you you other day, I ordered the GLM's too. Not a bad looking exhaust, tons cheaper than anything else out there. I did mainly for wieght reduction in the stern too. If I get a little boost from them, it's a bonus. I ordered mine from The Boat Store out of Beverly Mass. They are supplying me with nice stainless risers instead of the GLM aluminum risers. Thanks for the tip. Dave:cool-smiley-011: |
Okay another update, got the deck repaired. was going to delete the center safety line, but decided it was just too "classic" to loose. done with the expensive stuff, now just a bunch of little stuff....well for this year anyways:D
