1980 formula any good?

A buddy has a 20 ft formula thunderbird with bad motor are these boats any good? can they be made fast with a big block motor put in?

The boat had a 454/330hp he claims about 70mph with that. I would most likely look to double that power 600-700hp. it is a bigger boat. it's a tunnel hull boat.
