Re: Restoration project paint question

Dave, have you found that the Omni has more binders than pigment and takes a little more to cover? Also, the thinners take more time to cure so it won't tape track with multiple overlays. The...

Re: Restoration project paint question

Do not use chemical stripper!!!!! Block sand to a flat finish, prime/seal before paint. I have done both and learned the "quick" way with chems ain't the way on glass. The boat looks good in the...

Re: painting over gelcoat

I would probably single stage if colors are solid and base/clear before just clearing. The scuffing marks (made by sanding) will be magnified in clear if no base is applied or you may experience a...

Re: Awlgrip below waterline?

For whats it's worth, AwlGrip is a "true" polyureathane as it is mixed 1:1 with the activator. I would say the old Imron is comparable with it, but wouldn't go side by side with the new.

Re: Primer advice from the experts

I have used Duratec and Ginger is right, it does fill well, but doesn't sand as well ( kick with MEK) as K36 which I like which fills and sands well. It also make a good basecoat sealer with min....

Re: Need paint quotes please.

Hey, I might be interested if you aren't too far away. I need more pics to give a quote that won't scare ya! Serious, send`a PM and more details. I have over 20 years experience on custom exterior...

Re: Awlgrip below waterline?

I have used AwlGrip below the waterline on sanded gel-coat and never had a problem. AwlGrip is the most recognised product from US Paints, but as James said, they make several products for different...

Re: painting over gelcoat

As ratman said, you can clear over straight gel, but would need a physical adhesion from sanding with #600 DA or #800 W/D hand for adhesion besides the chemical bond with the gel.
As far as AwlGrip...

Re: My Boat Needs New Clear Coat?

It sounds like the clear that is "shot" is OEM in the mold before the colored gel. If it is hazed on top of the white surface, you should be okay to sand and reclear. I reccomend PPG 2021 clear coat...

Re: Wet sanding Allgrip

I agree with Dave about the machine sand vs water because a grit of dirt will do lots of damage and the time savings are worth the cost. I haven't seen AwlGrip repaired perfectly in a dark color,...

Re: painting over gelcoat

Dave, procedure sounds similiar except for the DP sealer. I have used tinted K36S for a sealer and let flash 15 min. before base. Other than that it is the same. Do you have a reason (other than the...

Re: Matching powder coated paint ??

Thanks for reiterating the PS suggestion. I know some mixing guys that are great with this and others I don't want to mix anything for me. They want to match so they can sell and they usually get...

Re: Used the 3M rubbing compound, what next

Better safe than sorry. The paint needs to cure and solvents released. New paint should be shiny and not need wax! If you gey some on the paint while waxin' the gel, don't panic, it ain't written in...

Re: Accurately Cut Rectangular Holes in Fiberglass Dash

Ever try a rechargable angle grinder with a small drum sander? Use Daves trick for the hole and heed the advice about checking fit often!

Re: 3M 4200 or 5200????? for swim deck?

I agree. 5200 is for PERMANENT installations ( like through-hulls and trim tabs) and bonding floors and such.

Re: Matching powder coated paint ??

If you can take a grab rail or small piece of painted hardware to a paint store, you might have a better chance because they will have more time to "play" with it. Don't rush them and your patience...

Re: Fiberglass Mat Question

This is a question for a pro like Dave, but one is a mat and the other is chopped mat. Different strenghts and thicknesses; depend on what you are trying to do with it.

Re: Polishing Imron?

AMEN Ginger! We used Imron esclusively at FPB and after a few weeks, it is like Awlgrip! # 2000 W/D is about all you would want to sand with and then it will take 2 or 3 compounds and graduated pads...

Re: Macco paint job, when the "best" is a waste of $

I'm glad for you! You did most of the un-fun stuff. Heck, if you buy the paint, I will shoot it for less than that! :D . Did they break the paint at the bottom radius?
