I had this problem with a Liberator 221 with a 454 King Cobra.

Took it to a OMC mechanic, change the drive oil and replaced with 100% synthetic, and lubed the cables. Have not had a problem...

You can use the Mobil 1. The problem is that when the oil is warm, the cone clutch can not move the oil out fast enough to engage in reverse. I replaced the lower cables because they werent moving...

The outdrive oil must be 100% synthetic. You can not use the same gear oil as Merc.

I had this problem with a 1991 454 King Cobra. Drained the out drive, and checked the cables.

I heard that with the OMC outdrive, if you do not use 100% synthetic gear oil, you may create a problem.

A couple of things I have found out about this problem. Could be as simple as having too much gear oil, preventing the cone from fully engaging. The oil must also be fully synthetic. Standard gear...
