Shift cable or cluth bec the uper shaft has a spiral and thats what hold it in gear the pressure from the motor running

Part number for the gears that should be in there is no longer made you need a whole new gear set the gears are taller and the shifter is shorter new gears and old shifter will not work.

i would have to think it is something to do with...

i would have to think it is something to do with a warped gasket surface. If it was at idel or coming off of plane i would say elbows are to low or bad flappers
