My drives are from -76 and the Merc Service manual number 2 specifies 81 Fl. Oz. I looked in manual no 5 now and it specifies 3 quarts like you say.

I can't remove the top cap without removing the rear cap because of the hydraulic steering, Is it still ok to remove the rear cap without draining the oil?

Interesting, so you put 4 quarts, the same as for the TR-drive. How come Mercruiser specify 2.6 quarts? Seems like a bit to big a difference.

By the way I have been filling through the oil plug...
