A Record Has Been Broken !!!

Happy Halloween !:drink:

ASBURY PARK — In blood-spattered bridal gowns and bathrobes, in Santa suits and on stilts, the undead impersonators who gathered at Convention Hall Saturday afternoon had a common goal: Break the record for world's biggest zombie walk.

Only in its third year, the event has become a Halloween weekend destination for thousands. Enough costumed participants joined in last year to drive organizer and city resident Jason Meehan to try for the record this time around. The number to beat was 4,026, Meehan said.

Kelly Varga, 24, and mom Mary, 46, both of Hazlet, were in white scrubs stained with fake gore, red dye spilling from shards of glass embedded in carefully crafted forehead wounds. They had no trouble coming up with costumes.

"I just graduated from nursing school," Kelly said.

"And she can't get a job," her mom chimed in.

"So, I had a whole bunch of extra scrubs." A public display of terror is her kind of Halloween tradition, Kelly said. "I love the horror. As long as I can remember, I always wanted to be something scary."

Rachael Hearon, 27, of Lakewood, was strolling the boards in the jaws of a great white shark costume splashed with liberal amounts of fake blood.

"I kind of just went into Five Below and had an epiphany," she said. "We're near the beach, so I figured, zombie shark, zombie victim."

She and her friend, Gina Gainey, 25, also of Lakewood, were carrying backup supplies.

"I've got a quart of blood here," Hearon said, pulling a container out of a side pocket.

Watching the ghastly crowd from the sidelines was Daniel Guenther, area manager for WIS International, a Staten Island-based inventory counting service — a must-have for any group hoping to break a world record.

The method is simple, he said. Before they lurched off into the twilight to terrorize the city, each zombie would shuffle from boardwalk to beach via one of four stairways, and get counted twice by his staff for accuracy. Requirements were zombie-like pallor and darkened eye sockets. Zombie dogs, while numerous, were not eligible.

It's the usual procedure for a crowd count, said Guenther, even if it's not your usual crowd. "It's my first time doing a zombie walk," he said.

As darkness fell, Meehan reported success.

"We just got everybody headed off in the direction of Cookman Avenue," he said, and he gave the official count, probably much lower than the actual number of undead: 4,093.
