brake calipers and pads wearing into the hubs
#1
Ordered my trailer with the HD axles and 16" wheels, approx 2 yrs ago. My calipers are so tight in fitting the space, the pad backing plates have worn a groove 1/32" in one of the hubs. Plus that backing pad has worn down. There is also a marking where the outer part of caliper has rubbed too. On the wheel inside, the caliper only clears the wheel by approx 1/8", so no chance of moving the calipers outward. Only fix I see is to turn the OD of the hub down 1/8", but then you get into the hub thickness which I have not checked, down a bit to clear the calipers and brake pads. All 4 wheels show the same clearance issues, but the pictures are of the worst.
I'm wondering if I got a mis match of components, basically over sized hubs.

Did I read correctly that the wheels also have rub marks on them ? If that is the case then you need to get larger wheels. What is happening is that the wheel is flexing enough to hit the caliper when you are making a tight turn. Have you ever really looked at what the wheel/tire combo goes thru when you do a tight turn?? The caliper is a floating assembly and when the wheel flexes it pushes the caliper into the hub. Are you with me ? Also do not take any material off the hub. If it is not the correct thickness it will crack under heavy braking forces. Go to 17" or 18" wheels and thje problem will be gone.

Sorry,
No, the calipers do not hit the wheels. I was just showing there is about 1/8" clearance between the wheels and calipers. There are no rub marks on the wheel insides to show any flexing of the caliper mounting plate or wheels. So larger wheels will not be the cure. Smaller hubs is the only fix that I can see, but then it would be stepping down to a smaller brake assembly. Kinda defeats part of the purpose of going HD. Click on the pictures for larger view.
BTW, they are Kodiak brake assemblies.
Thanks

O.K. Sorry about the misread. You could try and grind away a little of the pad at the bottom maybe ?

Already ground on the pads some. Still not enough.
Does any one else have Kodiak disc brakes on the 8 lug hubs that could eyball their setup to see what knd of clearance you have? Thanks

Running this thru again.

I have Kodiak's on 6 and have nothing close to this. My suggestion would be to remove the entire disc/rotor and take it to a professional metal shop and have it taken down a bit on a lathe.

Check with Kodiak about having a caliper mounting bracket specifically for the HD hub, it seems to me you're using an HD hub with standard caliper mounting parts, the increase in diameter isnt compensated for in the bracket, if there is a special one for the HD hubs, problem will be solved there, BUT it may push it out into the rim, then you would have to upgrade rims and tires....Good luck

I think a call to either Kodiak or Eagle is in order to get to the bottom of this.
Thanks
