I just picked this up. Been looking for 2 years and found nothing but basket cases until this one. Needs a few things but they are all small fixes.
Ran it twice so far and does 80mph at 4200rpm cruise. Not sure of top end yet.
Details:
1989 Larry Smith 38'
All kevlar, never a race boat.
Bobby Moore rigged.
Twin Staggered 705ci All aluminum Donovan's, Naturally aspirated. 10:1 compression.
750hp on pump gas
Speedmaster #5's with Huber 1450 trans.
102mph (not confirmed yet)
Six pack cockpit. No cabin.
I am VERY stoked right now.

Jody165,
Sweet boat!! That's my buddy Tim's 42' Fountain (Reggies old Ohio Steel) in the background.
I live in Carlsbad also. Are you going to take it out this weekend for the thunderboat rcaes in Mission bay?? If so, look for the Fountain (Never satisfied) in the picture and a 38 TS Top Gun (Smokin' Gun), I'll be on the Cig.....see you there or around.

Semper Fi, I will be taking my 33 Powerplay twin outboard to the races on Sunday. I invited a bunch of buddys and it is good for that sort of thing. The Scarab will be a special occasion type of boat. I have a couple little kids and so I will be lucky to get it out once per month. The wife/kids love the Powerplay. Hard to get a hall pass these days. Would like to hook up with you guys here in SD. Look for my Powerplay on Sunday.

Jody165,
By the way, how do you like the Powerplay?? I have always wated to get a 33' with some big power. Probably next year!!
Tell me how the boat is, I just wated to hear your opinion, since everyone I talk to that has one says they are great boats, especially in the rough water.

Awesome boat - especially with staggered power! Have been sniffing around for a LS 38 hull. Any of the 'Basket Cases' you found have a halfway decent hull? Can't wait to hear the confirmed top speed when you join the 100-MPH club!

Semperfi, I really like the Powerplay. It is so solid and well built. Mine is kinda slow since it has smaller outboards but it is great in rough water for it's size and everything is built right. I got it for a song. After I bought it I wanted something faster but the wife wasn't about to let the Powerplay go since it's so great for ocean and Lake Mead and the kids.
That led to my search for a Hotrod boat. No compromises! Took me awhile but found it.
OshkoshThunder, I did find what seemed to be a clean LS 38 at Honker Cut marine in North Cal. It was kinda different though. It had Arnesons and side by side engine set up. Gas tank was in front of the engines behind the bolster. Only one row of bolsters. It was supposedly built for Betty Cook but she quit racing before it was finished. That's their story, they wanted $50k without power.
Everything else I found was beat up.
