Take the "Catalina Flyer" to Catalina Island. You gotta drive half an hour North to Newport Beach to catch the "Flyer".
While in Newport, rent a "Duffy" canopied electric boat. Get some wine, and some cheese and crackers and explore the whole Newport backbay for a couple hours. Bring some CD's as they usually have CD players in the rentals. Tons of boats and nice houses to see...Dave

Dave has some great ideas.... but also consider stopping at the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach for a drink. www.montagelagunabeach.com

Boats do leave directly from Dana Point to Catalina, so I don't think you have to go to Newport to get to Catalina. We've done the Duffy in Newport... what a blast.
