Spaying Gelcoat - any advice?
#1
Well I did it again. Now that th nice weather is here I decide to pull the motors to install a tunnel tab and extension boxes on my boat. This will change the steer cylinder mounting from the transom to the extension boxes and I'll be removing the K-Planes from the sponsons.
I know how to fill the unused mounting holes in the transom, but I've never tried spraying gelcoat before. Can I use the low pressure auto style gun I already have? Where can I get the gelcoat? Is it very much different from spray an auto type paint?
Any advice is appreciated.
Jeff

Go to www.minicraft.com they have gelcoats and gelcoat reducer that makes spraying easy. automotive gun will work fine with there reducer. you will need gelcoat/reducer/wax additive/and hardner. I use the little spray bottles for small repairs. If you use the reducer it does a nice job, not much orange peel to wet sand out and buff

Here's a couple links about Fiberglass repairs, there are a bunch more out on the internet,
http://www.spectrumcolor.com/technicalinfo.htm
http://www.fiberlay.com
http://www.fibreglast.com/contentpag...enter-286.html
in the last one be sure to read about Duratec, it's an additive to help spray gelcoat.
Good Luck,
Caleb

Sounds like you want to use a filler like the west system two part... leave it a little lower than the surrounding surface and then gel it.
When you do the gel... do not underestimate the fumes.
Those fumes are some serious fumes. They sink low and hang out.
I would do a respirator set up next time I do gel.
Fiberglass filler not so much.
Good luck.

The next project I undertake, I think I'll try gel instead of paint just for the helluva it. It can't be anyworse than sanding off the paint I did three or four times.
