Hi Russ;
Here`s how I did the engine for my vette and it has held up very well.
With the engine on a good stand, I taped off all of the openings with duct tape. If you have a problem with the tape I can recomend an expert.
Then, I cleaned everything with a wire brush mounted on a drill untill it was all shiney.
After that, I cleaned everything with either prep solvent or laquer thinner.
The next step was to prime eveything with PPG DP 40 epoxy primer. After that cured and was able to be top coated, I applied two coats of PPG Delstar arcrylic enamel with the Delthane hardener added.
This has proved to be very durable and has held up the the heat exceptionly well. Make sure that you use a respirator when using these products as they are very toxic. If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call.

I've painted engines in both Centari and Imron.
Using Veriprime underneath both.
I was thinking of using Awlgrip on my last engine paint job, but couldn't get the red I wanted.
I can see no reason not to use awlgrip on an engine, that stuff is hard as nails.
