I noticed this year that my trim pump will stop working when it gets to the top of the trim limit (before hitting the "trailer" button). This is typically how far I keep it trimmed on the trailer or idling through some of our shallow channels. I've had several instances where the trim pump will hit this "dead spot" and if I go to the bilge and give it a rap with my fist it will work again. Neither the trim in the handle nor the dash button will make it work...the only cure is hitting it with my fist and giving it a jolt. What causes this and how should I fix it? New pump? Rebuild? If rebuild where can I find parts?

Could it be one of the connectors at the pump.

I think it's something inside the pump...it's not a connection externally as I went through them at the end of the season last year and checked all of them. I'm not familiar enough with electrical components to know if there can be a dead spot somewhere between the armature and the brushes?? It works most of the time but ended up giving me trouble at the end of the day on Sunday. A simple rap on the top of the pump assembly and it worked fine again. I know that many automotive starters have similar issues and you can bang on the starter with a rubber mallet and it will work fine again....HELP!

I think you anwsered your own question with the automotive starter. I always use a peen hammer to get a better blow
Replace the pump I will bet that solves your problem.

So the question is...do I need to replace just the motor? Is there something in the pump?

I was haveing trouble with one of mine and took it apart and found that the ground conector was the problem.There is a male female type conector on the in side of the motor just on the ground.If it was mine I would open it up.

Nobody has ever rebuilt a trim pump motor before? C'mon guys...offer some suggestions

Can you hear a clicking when you hit the trim switch....just wondering if it could be a solonoid. Makes sense that when you beat it (like a car starter) it works again. If I remember correctly, the solonoids are fairly cheap aftermarket. Just a thought.
