I trashed the internals, but the cases are in good shape. No swelling or scars inside. How much are they worth a piece??
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Shawn

Standard Bravos? And what broke inside? Any broken teeth on gears and the tower gets egg shaped and cracks you dont see develop below the surface. I have two here now that look good, but the tower is egg shaped..
Fill us in on what happened to this drive..

Its a 2000 Bravo 1.
Cruising about 55 and the upper forward gear set went. Stripped about 7 teeth on the forward gear and the gear on the drive shaft. The prop shaft and the vertical shaft are both torque twisted from the motor. I was surprised the outdrive lasted more than 3 years with the motor
The motor is a Whipple supercharged 96' 502 with a bunch of goodies in it. I ended up buying used outdrive with no exchange so I have my old torn apart in the garage. The upper was easy to take apart with regular tools. I have to have the special tool to get the lower apart I think. Anyway, I don't see any physical damage to the upper. As for the lower, that wasn't the reason the outdrive broke, so I don't think there is any damage othert than the twisted shafts.
I hope this is a lil' bit more info.
Thanks

What I have found is that when teeth are stripped you need to check the tower for being round and straight. That will give a clue as to underlying cracks or problems. I had a gauge made to slip over the tower that checks alingment and roundness, so to speak. I have found that if the tool wont slip over the tower, you can measure it, but in one direction only, through the holes in the front and back of the case. It should measure 1.999" with the race installed. I have seen 1.996" and only 3 teeth were stripped and the pinion had none. I had one that I milled the tower off that was egg shaped and it was all cracked underneath. I usually pass on putting steel towers in the ones that are cracked, but I am working on a source for welding the cracks to make the case useable again.
Another area I look at is the wear pads, if the plastic has broken off, or if there has been gimble issues, I have seen them worn pretty bad and I wont reuse them. Another area is where the inner pinion bearing race sits. Sometimes a ridge will be present, showing wear to the case from that bearing.
This is what I have found, not to say that your case may be in that shape, but you should check it to qualify it.
I hope this helps.
