why did merc stop building the scorpion?

Just a guess, but I think it was because nobody bought them. I heard that the boats that actually got the Scorpion engines ran very well, but the cost hurt them.

Way too much money for what you got.
Nobody bought them.
Other custom motor builders built better and more HP small blocks for much less than the MERCURY price tag.

I have two scorpions in my 30 Sonic, great motors so far, no major problems. They need 92 octane. I wanted to save weight due to my custom engine hatch etc. modifications. At the time the HP rating was great compared to most heavy block blocks. But now, most good custom engine builders can crank out 550 HP for less than $8,000 in a big block, so these make more sense. That will likely be my next upgrade as the boat can handle the extra weight.
