Hi all. I posted awhile back on how to remove my drive and about a bent prop shaft. At the time, running the engine with it out of gear and trim down, i would notice a "gear" noise coming from the top area of the drive. Also, even at idle, the top of the drive would warm up. Since, the drive was taken to the shop, prop shaft replaced, and rest inspected for the noise i complained about. My mechanic said everything looked good and could not see any problems. I've been running the boat since, about 20 hours, with no problems. Tonight i was running the engine again to warm the oil for an oil change, and i could notice the same banging gear noise from the drive. It does get louder with increased rpm's, at one point, i did take it up to 1800 or so. This is with the trim 3/4 the way down. Also, again, the top quarter of the drive get's pretty warm, but not hot. I tried putting the drive in gear and the noise would drop to about a quarter from what i heard while not having the gear engaged. I'm just wondering what you all think of this and if i should be concerned. Thanks for your input. note: i have through hull exhaust, not through the drive.

Does it sound like a clicking noise? If so, It can be the shift fork boucing around being hit by the brass rings on the gears that aid in the shifting process.. I have put my hand on the top of the drive and could feel it and when I did a tear down inspection.. nothing was wrong...
Hope this helps

I have a Volvo Penta SX drive (very similar to the Bravo) and sometimes when the drive is warm and the boat is idling in neutral the upper gear set will make a slight knocking sound. I think it is caused by backlash in the gear set bouncing into the brass shift shoe. Easy to tell because as soon as it goes in either gear it quiets up. Has made it since it I bought the boat with 25 hours on it and still the same with close to 500.
