Hi,

I have a problem with my carb flooding when I hit a pretty good size wave. The motor will choke for a second and then clean out. If I'm on calm water it will never happen.

The carb is a custom bilt holley from an engine builder. It has about 20hrs of run time. This carb is not a marine version, but a circle track or race version. It picked up almost 20hp on the dyno over my stock 750.

I would like to know if there is a cure for this problem. It gets kind of hairy when the bow is pointing up and I have no power.

Sounds like the problem may lie in the float level. I would start the engine up and let warm, then let it idle while setting the float level. That simple.

Float bowl vent baffles.

Mine did the same thing, on re-entry. Float adjustments solved the problem.

Best way I know to adjust the floats is put boat on the trailer. Adjust the trailer/boat so the attitude reflects what it would be on the water at speed, or as close as possible. Put the hose on it and let the engine idle. Then adjust the floats. Adjust floats to the point where fuel just starts to dribble out of the sight holes of the bowls.

BTW....Be careful of gas and fumes!!! I put a water soaked towel under the sight holes to catch escaping fuel. It probably wasn't necessary as only a few drops escaped. But better safe than sorry.

Mine did the same thing. I fiddled with the float levels, put baffles on the vent tubes, even put anti-slosh foam in the carb. Nothing would cure it. Setting the floats low seemed to help the best. I finally gave up and bought a Mighty Marine Demon. The new carb solved the problem.

I know the Edelbrock carbs had the option of installing a spring-loaded needle and seat to prevent this condition. I used them on the Merc Weber that came on my old 7.4L. They called it an off-road seat. Maybe you can get the same thing for the Holley.

Unfortunately, I boat on a lake that is pretty rought on the weekends. And at 77mphs in a 18ft boat any small wave tends to put the bow up.
After spending a good buck on this carb, I would hate to have to replace it after 20hrs.

I too tried the spring loaded needles and seats. Didn't help me either.

i had the same problme with a 1050 dominator. I adjusted the float levels and it solved the problem.
