Anyone have a clue on this one? Someone put my friends boat in neutral while just coming off plane. The idle was prob at about 1500 ish which is about 500rpm higher that it would normally allow you to shift. That motor may have stalled. Not sure in that it happened too fast.

What is for sure is that the drive is stuck in Forward position. The stick won't go into neutral. It comes back only enough to bypass the neutral safety and allow the motor to start, but its starting in gear.

We tried rotating the prop by hand and it's stuck. Is the cone clutch somehow jammed? Any ideas on an easy way to rectify this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated he's supposed to go away on a boating trip in a few days.

Yes, your clutch cone is stuck. The same thing happen to me a few years ago. Had to replace the top section of gears with the clutch. No big deal for a good mechanic.

I would inspect the cables for any signs failier first. Disconnect the cables at the transom bracket and move the shifter then the transom pivot see what cables move and go from there, keep us posted.

I had something similar, shift cable was jammed in top of outdrive where cable connects to drive shift fork.

How did yours occur? Could you move the prop? Cables up to the transon are fine I think its either coen clutch or perhaps something with teh cable at the drive.

When pulling into slip I pulled shifter from forward to reverse quickly,it jammed,it was a bracket that holds cable to shift fork in top of drive .

Afriend fixed it. easy job.

I have "welded" my cone clutch before, but that was on an overrev when I didn't get the throttles pulled back on a launch. Cost is about $1,100 in parts. I had a friend break the shifting bracket ( piece that detaches from the shfting fork when you remove the drive) doing just what you did. His parts were about $15.

I second Mr. Gadgets. If you're handy enough to pull the outdrive off, take it over and he'll have it fixed in no time.
