Default Custom exhaust Question for H.P. gear heads

Custom exhaust Question for H.P. gear heads.

Ya don't see a whole lot of ( Y ) pipes anymore.
But they worked for scavaging horse power.
Looked Cool / Different.
And Sounded Different as well.

Downside, sometimes cracked just due to stress etc.
with heat and expansion.
Possibly restricted, depending on the cubic inch or
HP. you forced through them.

So Question is has any body ever tried the ( H ) pipe or
( X ) pipe method like they use on HP. cars. Just curious
if there would be any gains and you would still keep two
pipes running out the Transome for now restrictions. Plus
the possibility of more HP.

Thanks for any and all answers

I was looking at a friends 42' Fountain with staggered engines. He had Gil exhaust, but the exhaust had a crossover pipe. Is that what you mean by an "H" pipe? It sure didn't dress up anything in his engine compartment. I have no idea if it helped.

Yes that would be an " H " Pipe.
I know there big after market sellers for like your GT mustangs etc. Don't quote me but it seems like the " X " pipe is better that the " H " but any was seems like it was another 20 plus HP. ?

Not alot but figured if your building exhaust anyways and there's potential gain than why not add it in the initial build.

I doubt this would help much in a boat due to the fact that the pipes are already short, fat 4" and straight. The H and X pipes were made to balance the backpressure of both sided of the engine due to pulses created by the firing order. In an automotive configuration this is a bigger deal because the pipes are smaller with more bends and more restriction in the mufflers.

H Pipes were poular in boats in the late 80s when Donzi and a few others tried side exhaust. The boats sounded terrible, like a misfiring 4 cylinder and the H pipe was installed to solve this. New Chris Crafts have the same problem, side exhaust, they sound terrible.

Corsa used to offer an H pipe installation with one of their muffler packages. Not sure if that was for backpressure or silencing purposes. Anyone know?

Ya, I know! But it's tuff getting in front of the engines with that thing in the way. As it is, I get small puncture wounds from the pulleys!
