An exciting three days of offshore power boat racing is set for this weekend on Chickamauga Lake.
The 2005 Chattanooga Offshore Gran Prix will be held Friday through Sunday starting at the TVA Park at Highway 153 and Amnicola Highway.
The event will feature 28-to-52 foot offshore power boats racing at speeds from 69-to-150 miles-per-hour.
The event is sponsored by the STARS Power Boat Racing Rescue Team, which got its start in powerboat racing here in Chattanooga during the 1983 Riverbend Festival US Formula One Powerboat Racing Series. The STARS team has since traveled all over the United States, and the world, providing safety for numerous powerboat events and has been with APBA Offshore since 1989.
"The STARS Power Boat Racing Rescue Team is very proud to bring this event to the hometown they all know and love,'' race director Clay Ingle said. "Although this is a first time event in Chattanooga, we all hope it will go well and our hometown will enjoy it.
"We want everybody to come out and enjoy the races, meet the drivers and watch some exciting boat racing. We want to make this an annual event. That is our main goal.''
The Chattanooga Mile will be held Friday from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., where speed record will be attempted.
On Saturday, there will be closed course speed runs from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the course that runs from the Chickamauga Dam north past Murray Hills and Bal Harbor.
The two main races will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Admission is $10.00 for a weekend pass (Saturday and Sunday). Admission is free on Friday for everyone. Children under 12 will be admitted free all three days. Tickets can be purchased at the gate.
Proceeds will benefit The Baroness Foundation Burn Unit Fund and the Local Volunteer Rescue Teams.
The boats can be seen up close and personal on Friday night from 7-11 p.m. downtown on Broad Street between 2nd and 3rd streets.
