Run the boat for a base line and find out what the Rev limits are set at on a stock 502. If you are within a 2-300 RPM get the props labbed
If you are way off then yes step it down to 26. I run labbed 30's that top out at 5350 for speed and heavy cupped 30's @ for cruising that top out at 5000rpm.
This info is for HP500 warmed up to 550-575 HP per side.

I run 30 4 blades and run right at rev I have run labbed 28 4 blades and they were great for out of the hole and mid punch but lost some top end. 99 38 with 525sc's and 12" boxes. Hope this helps.

I own a 2000 with 502s and B1s. Im running labbed 28s and turn just over 5000 with them, there just about perfect. I can hit 73.5 on GPS top end but my mid range punch is not much, I would like to have a pair of 26s for rough water and the like, should make the mid rande respond much better. Good luck with your new 38

Don't know if I can help as I have the 575sci's in my 2001 but what I can say is you should try a set of the 5 blade maximus, I love them. You could compare a set of 5 blade 26" to the 4 blade 28's and I bet you will be happier with the 5 blades. If the 502's have enough grunt to make them work you will see fantistic hole shot, super midrange and improved stability in rough water.
