If you're alone and you're not at the helm the boat should be in neutral or the ignition OFF!

What are the odds of this happening? Damn longshot, I'd say, unless---
HE HAD THE AUTOPILOT TURNED ON. He was a mile out of LA or Long Beach, pointed and clicked, left the bridge and went to clean a bit. Was the possibility of this mentioned in the article?
No other way this could have happened. Catalina ain't all that big and is TWENTY SIX MILES OUT.

do you really think he would hang on a bouy in shark infested waters for a photo op? i think they have a lot of great white in ca, thou maybe not that far south. i hope chuck norris hears about this and roundhouse kicks some reporter to death if its a hoax
