Easy-off will do it. Get a plastic pot-scrubber to help break down the old paint- sometimes thick areas require a second or third app. Do not wet the area in advance. Have paper towels and a garbage bag handy to wipe up the goo. If you have a boot stripe or bottom paint, don't let it run down onto it. The oven cleaner will sometimes discolor the gelcoat- if this happens, pour some bleach on a rag and wipe the affected area.

I used a razor blade on the painted on numbers on my boat. I had a lot of time to do and it took a long time to do. Be very careful and use a lot of blades to keep from gouging the gell.

A little acetone/compound mix on a buffer works well also. No matter what you use the name will leave it mark on the side of the boat. The gelcoat won't be faded under the name and the fiberglass didn't expand and shrink like the rest of the boat while it was shaded from the sun by the name. You can usually feel where the name was by running your fingers across the hull.
