My daily drive is now 90 miles round trip and I am looking for something with better gas mileage.
My two posibilites are:
1)getting rid of my 2001 2500 4x4 Dodge Ram V10 (that gets 10mpg) and getting a 2002-2005 4X2 2500 Dodge ram with 5.9 diesel.
2) Or getting a small beater car (honda civic) that gets like 25 mpg and keeping my truck for towing the boat.
I love trucks and have always had trucks so I am wondering what is the real world gas mileage of the 2002-2004 5.9 cummins in a 4x2. If it gets something closes to 20 mpg I won't have to drive a car! So please let me know!
Thanks
Don

Buy a beater. I bought a used V-6 beater for $3500, and I actually like driving it. Its nice not to care where you park, what you bump into, and what the valet does to it when your not looking.

Well I've got an 2001 and with the mods I've done (all to improve towing and mileage) unloaded I get 21 mpg and towing my Scarab (#6000? ) I can get 15-16 if I tow at 70mph. Towing my 25' Enclosed snowmobile trailer (#7500) it gets 13-14 depending on wind conditions.
My dad has a 2005 that is all stock with about 5000miles on it and towing that same enclosed trailer could only pull about 11-12 mpg. Now I know when it gets broken in and if he adds some mods it will improve mileage I know it did on mine. When adding performance enhancer's the mileage will increase to a certain point then it falls off.
On my 01 I've got an Edge EZ, 275 injectors, 4" exhaust and an aftermarket trans with a converter that has less slippage than stock.
Both of ours are 4wd quad cabs.

I have an 04 Quad cab 4x4 with 5.9 diesel.I also installed 4" lift and 35" tires and 411 gears.If I cruise at 60 mph I run around 18 to 19 mpg.At 75 mph it drops to about 14 to 15 mpg.

My wife drives a Civic beater and she gets more like 35+ mpg. that's a big difference over 25.....
beaters are where it's at...... run em hard, not worry about a darn thing.!
