I can not believe the problem I am having finding a harmonic balance installer for the 496HO. The installer must have a M16x1.5 thread where it screws into the crank shaft. The typical off the shelf installer kits from K&N and other specialty tool suppliers all have the M16x2.0 adapter. The Merc service manual says tool # J23523E which is not a Mercury or a GM number per the respective dealers. These same dealers say to try SnapOn, MAC Tools, etc, etc. who do not seem to have the proper M16x1.5 thread for the installer either. At least per the rep's I have talked to so far.

This is Bazaar. With all the 496 marine engines being reworked the tool has to be out there. Please everyone flood me at the same time with confirmed sources for this tool!

I purchased the pieces of the Mac Tool TP1330 HB Installer kit appropriate for the 496HO. Only problem is when the installer is assembled to the crank with the H. Balancer ready to be installed, the installer nut is deep within the harmonic balancer itself such that only a socket can work. Also since the nut screws down onto the installer shaft the shaft protrudes farther and farther out the nut such that only a deep well socket may (???will???) work. The nut requires a 1.25" deep well socket. The largest 1/2" drive deep well SnapOn and Mac Tools socket on their web site stop at 1.125".

Please explain in detail how you install a 496HO harmonic balancer and all the tools you use (and where I could get them from)

This is all I found which will not install a 496HO balancer. Did I miss something here? Can you be more specific as to where to get the correct installer?

Try Summit Racing. Their kit is really nice and mush less $$$ the any Snap-On or MAC.

Nice tool and price but does not have the m16x1.5 metric thread adapter that is needed for the 496HP crank. Unless I am looking at the wrong tool????
