Default Time to buy props

Julie, Brian... I have a 1984 Formula 302 SR-1. 502 carbs, TRS drives 420HP. Boat weighs 6900lbs dry. 150 gallon fuel tank. WOT 4600RPM @ 64MPH. Has Hydromotive 25p 4-Blades. Should I step down to 23p? It does well out of the hole. I'm looking for 5200rpm WOT and 70+. Possible? Any suggestions? How much for pair?

Thx,

BuilderBob

Builder Bob,

Each inch of pitch is equal to 200 RPM. So you need to drop 3 inches of pitch to get to 5200 RPM at WOT. However the carbbed 502 should run at 5000 RPM at WOT so I would agree with you on the 23P it should be just about right.

Your boat can normally use extra bow lift that the Hydros can't give you. I would try 26 Bravo 1's to keep you around 4600 and eventually Lab Finish them to 4900 and get the speed that comes along. Your slip is low enough to make this work. This will get you near your mark.

Builder Bob...
I have a set of labbed 26 Bravo 1s. They are a little dinged up. They came on my 30 Velocity. It's turning 4900-5k empty or loaded up at 72-73mph. I think I'm running outa camshaft and don't like spinning that high on my 454s.

Shogren is shipping me some 28 or 30s as part of the purchase agreement. I don't want to sell them, I'm gonna have them dressed up and keep for spairs.

You're welcome to try them out to see how they work for you. Then maybe you'll have a better idea what to buy. I see yer also in Ohio. I go up to the islands alot too.

Send me a PM if you want.

Builder Bob,
I have a similar situation. I had a pair of quicksilver 3 blade 25's that I could not get out on plane with easily, but they would run 72-73mph @ 52-5300 rpm. My boat is a scarab panther 6800lbs dry, 150 gal fuel. and merc 425's with a few extras, exhaust and a little head porting and TRS. I tried a pair of Hydro 25's and it knocked my rpm's down to 4600 @ 64 mph.

I then took my quicksilvers to my prop shop and they told me my cupping was washed out. They added the cupping and it is a day and night difference getting on plane, I lost about 175 rpm's and 2 mph but I was not able to get on plane in 2-3 waves the way they were.

The hydro's didn't give me any bow but lots of stern lift. The boat felt like it never got on plane and was always pushing water, not riding on the water. I now have a set of hydro 24's that I am going to try for the heck of it, but I to want to try some Bravo 1's 24-26 pitch. Anyone want to trade?

Hope my experience might help.
