Why are performance marine parts 100x more expensive than other performance parts?

Just curious ... Seems like all performance marine parts are at least 2x more expensive than their automotive counterparts; sometimes 20-30x more expensive.
Is it simple supply and demand, or demographics, or is there that much more put into marine performance parts to warrant the hefty premium?

Lower volume would be my guess. Not to mention that as long as people are paying the inflated prices, the prices will only continue to rise. They have you by the gonads.

Lower volume coupled with the whole boating mystique - Let's face it, it's a luxury market, prices are set according to what the consumer is willing to bear.

Marine parts are usually much more heavy duty than their automotive counterparts. They must perform in a marine environment that is far more harsh than automotive. Many times they have internal parts that are specially made of metals that are not affected by salt water.
