What is everyone going with for a small chartplotter? It would go above the dash on a 47 Fountain. How about the Garmin GPSMAP 478 or GPSMAP 492C? Thanks Mike

Buddy has a 47 and has a 182c above the dash just under the windshield. Good luck, Wrink

Garmin is the name to check out. Try the 182C an older unit or the newer 192C. Also the 172 is becoming a widely used unit also.

Thanks, I am on their website right now. The 492 looks nice. I am wondering if the 478 would be to small. I like that it has the XM weather on it to help against the FLorida rain storms.

remember that the models above 172 have sonar which is really a waste of money for performance boaters....unless you take along a couple of rods for fishing and want to know if there are any fish around or the cartography of the bottom

I got a Garmin 182C from Boaters World and got a great deal--$600. It's a discontinued model but all I needed for 26' CCF.

It's got GPS/Sounder and the transducer gives water temp and all kinds of good stuff and really easy to use and all the displays can be easily customized.

Some of the new Garmins include a great base map that includes rivers and lakes and you don't need to buy thier BlueChart cards.

Stay away from Standard Horizon---I got one of thier new ones and it was a total nightmare to install. I returned it.

I just purchased the 172C. West Marine and US Boat will match online prices. I liked the smaller size of the 172C although the new G2 maps would have been nice. The 178C can be used on land (Metro Guide North America) as well as sea if that is an option you desire.
