Default What Is A Leak Down Test???

Can someone tell me what a leakdown test is and what the benefits are. What is the difference between a leakdown test and a compression test?? Sorry for my ignorance. Any offshorers out there that can inform me? Thanks!!

A leakdown tester is a where the each cylinder is pressurized with air 100+ lbs. The engine is not running and a strong person holds a breaker bar on the crank. The measured rate of air going past rings and valves at TDC will tell you the condition of an engine. By far a better test than simple compression. It is the only way to test a two stroke. I have seen 2 stroke engines with good compression, but a lot of leakdown that ran like garbage they were so worn out. The unit is not that expensive. Requires an air compressor source.

also can tell you if you have any problem in the valve train(burn valve or carbon deposit) as well as a good pin point to blow head gasket diagnostic, just my $0.02

Have really had no problems, I just want to get a more accurate picture of the engine longevity wise. Also, I fear I may be losing a little power (502 mag mpi). I just took it to the dealer and told them to see whats-what... I had a compression check when I bought the boat but not a leakdown test and wanted to see the results...
