Default How do you change your oil?

Ok dumb as it may sound... before I put this motor back in my Scarab. How do your guys change your motor oil? Do you let it dump in the hull? Do you have a rig to help change it? What do you do if you want to change oil regularly?

I use a pump to pull it out of the dipstick tube. If you motor is out I would HIGHLY recommend an oil pan drain tube that can be pushed through the drain plug and out the back of the boat.

Through the dipstick.

Buy the hose that screws into the oilpan. Then you just pull that hose out the hull drain plug hole, and let it drain. No pumps no mess, and you get 100% of the oil out.

I've had the on-board pump, and used the "oilchanger" 12 bucket/pump through the dipstick for years. Have 496's now w/the drain hoses that come out the transom. There is no simpler more efficient or complete choice. You'll need a drain plug on both sides of the center stringer so the hoses goe no where but down and out.

Second choice would be an on-board manifold and pump drawing the oil from the afformentioned pan plug hoses. This is nice if your boat doesn't get out of the water much.

I just installed a system in my boat while I had the engines out. It has drain hoses from the drain plugs to a Y-block then to a gunnel mounted pump. Turn a valve, push a button and with warm engine oil, about 2 minutes a side!

The company is Quick Drain 866-700-2250 and the owner is Bill Hundt. Great guy to deal with!

Dave

PS...Tell him you heard about this from me and he'll give you a great deal!

had the quick drain...the pump failed after about 5 changes...

of course that was years ago. The product may be different now.

I think it pays to just get a good aircraft quality pump like the big boys use if your gonna go this route, and be done with it.
