Default Hang over the side zincs ???

after all my corrosion problems, I am going to get one of these super-grouper's http://www.boatzincs.com/grouper-specs2.html

It needs to be attached to ground and on a high peformance boat with the cockpit covers it seems like it would be a pain. Could I just run a ground wire from the negatvie terminal of one of my batteries and connect it to one of the 4 screws on my rear cleat and then just hook the alligator clip to my cleat when docked and throw the fish over the side ???

P.S. what about prop nut zincs ?? dont see one for bravo 1's listed, and the thread pattern for 1 and 3 are different, anybody use a prop nut zinc ??

You know who runs those...I don't know if they are exactly the same....But I saw them on Tonto in Key West. PM him, he'd be able to give you the info I'm sure.

We use them during the Ft. Lauderdale show.
Your better off grounding it to the engine directly or the bolts on the gimbal. Don't think I'd put it on the battery.
Can you reach the bolts on an outdrive?

That sounds like a good idea .Hooking a ground wire to the cleat to the engine.

I wonder if it makes that much difference like if I was on vacation for a week in salt water just using it at night when I am not using the boat in the slip ?????????????

Electrolysis can/will happen in very short order. I lost two outdrives because a goober was allowed in marina with 12V and 110volt wires dangling in water under boat (home-made houseboat).

The marina was held harmless by terms in contract and my insurance specifically excluded electrolysis. Ther is a method you can use with a VOM meter to check how "hot" water is--it only takes like 2 millivolts to eat up an outdrive---mine went in a few weeks !!! I became a barracks expert on it when I got zapped.

THe zinc groupers are excellent protection and warining system--used by people that cruise and use many different marina's.

Also make sure your BONDING system has continuity and is intact at ALL points in system including thru hulls, engines, electrical system etc

I attached an MSWord document I found when I was fightin this problem.

Here's more on the subject, from an excellent resounrce for anyone that's interested:

Chris, the overboard zinc system that you're comtemplating works very well. There are many people who use such systems at my marina with great success. You have to keep a constant eye on it though, as you'd be amazed how fast the system needs fresh anodes.
