Anyone Heard of Hoss Propellers?
#1
Anyone out there ever run a propeller by Hoss Props (www.hossprops.com)?
I have a 28 Commander Cat with a single engine 540. After blowing-up one Bravo after another I went to a Mercruiser SSM V. My X dimension is 21 inches and right now my prop shaft is in-line with the bottom of the boat (SSM has a 2" spacer).
So far I have tested with Merc cleaver props and had the following results:
16 x 33 (ears rounded to trick boat into thinking prop has rake)-Can't get on plane
16 7/16 x 30-Can't get on plane
17 1/2 x 31-Got on plane fairly easy. At 4K rpm boat ran 70.7 mph (11% slip). Could not go over 4K rpm due to old gas in boat. Throttle was barely 1/3 to 1/2 forward so 31 pitch is way to small. This prop drove the bow down (tail lift) so that water was breaking 1-2 ft in front of step.
Previous testing when I had the Bravo set-up showed the boat liked plenty of rake (riding bow high). I spoke with Hoss props and he said he could provide a 16 1/2 x 33 or 34 pitch prop that would have 20-23 degrees of rake (round ear design). I have never heard of Hoss props prior to this and wanted to see if anyone has ever tested one of his props. Would like to know if they work and if they are stable. Do they get on plane easy? Can anyone help?

I don't know about #5 props, but he excellant with bravos. I have used him for yrs as well as many of my friends. His work has always worked better than expected. Usually faster speeds, less RPM's and great planing. He has been at this for many yrs.

He has been making these props for a while. The only thing I would ask is if the blades are welded on or if the prop is a one piece casting. Then make your own decision from there.

MTI,
Thanks for the info. Dave at Hoss Props said he is very familiar with Talon's, which is the exact same bottom as mine. I just hadn't heard of him until just recently and wanted to see if anyone else had used him.
Thanks again for the info.
Anyone else out there have info???????????????

Hey 112 , I ran a hoss prop on my old 22 foot Talon 2.5 efi , Great prop !!! It was a 27 pitch , I could pull a skier or tube and then run low 90's all the way home , Dave knows what he's doing .

Talon25,
Thank you for the info. One quick question. Because I am starting new (from Bravo 1 to SSM V) and right now short on test data, I was wondering how did you find Dave at Hoss to be in the customer service department. I don't think I will be dead on with my initial prop and it may need a little tweaking (not that you can do a lot of tweaking with a SSM V prop). Not that I don't expect to pay a lil $$$ for tweaking, but some folks almost charge the same price for tweaking as it would be to buy a new prop.

Commander112 ,
As far as custermer service he was good to me , I killed my Hoss on a rock at Alexander Bay , he built me a new one pretty quick , worked as good as the origanal the first time out never sent itback so I'm not sure what he was charging for a little adjustment . Try to borrow another prop and get some more info for him to work with if you can . I think he will get you close , he does know that Talon bottom . I wish I would have tried his props on my Talon 25 before I sold it , great ride , I think your hull is very close to Talon's .
Good luck !! What kind of speed are you looking for ?

Good stuff but I don't think he is looking to do much anymore.
Yes the blades are welded, that part isn't do good.
