July 20, 2006 - Emergency crews returned to Winthrop Harbor- near the Illinois/Wisconsin border- to search for a missing teenage boy Thursday morning.
According to officials, the 14-year-old was swimming with friends around 1 p.m. Wednesday at the North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor went he went under. Crews spent several hours looking for the boy before suspending their search due to weather.
"They drifted out a little too far. We were told by the people swimming that they attempted to get back, a couple of swimmer's got into trouble to try to help each other and when they turned around to help the 14 year-old he went under," said Joel Brumlik, Winthrop Harbor Police.
Authorities hope to send scuba divers back in the water for what they're now calling a recovery effort.
