Default Broken Lifters

While tracing oil leak and deciding to replace gasket found lifter parts in oil pan, what would cause a lifter to break. These mechanical lifters do not have a continuous cylinder shape, instead they have a tab or 25% (black section) of the cylinder with a crossbar connection the two lifters together, they broke at the base of the black section, engine was still running fine. Engine has less than 1.5 hours on it, Any help would be appreciated
