What speed am I looking for? With that you can build a motor or add a blower and do it right the first time and save money in the long run.
What kind of condition is your motor in now and how many hours?
Is it ready for a rebuild?
Heads and cam will set you back 4 to 5K and give you 50 to 75 HP tops which may give you 4-5MPH if you are lucky.
A blower will be the cheapest overall investment and you can probably find 15MPH out of it.
Give us some more information on your motor and condition. What prop you are now turning, max RPM and top speed.
Then tell us what you want out of the boat and what your total budget is.
There are a lot of folks on here that can help you out.

A buddy of mine has a 1997 or 1998 272 with 454 mag (385hp) and a Procharger and he runs mid-70's all day long. This is with a 28 pitch Bravo 1 prop and he can still hit the rev limiter easily.

I have a 2000 272,it ran 62 stock with 502 mpi,I modified a few things
and now it runs in low 90's. Set a realistic budget and let us know what your speed goals are and we'll see if we can help,Smitty

Best thing to do is find somebody going fast and buy their sh*t! You'll save a ton of money.(not really). Always listen to the Board and not your buddies!
